Bollywood Icon Anil Kapoor Made Itx to TIME Magazine’s AI Cover, Sparking Global Buzz

TIME magazine recently released its much-anticipated list of the “100 Most Influential People in AI 2024,” featuring a mix of expected names from the tech world and some surprising figures. While tech leaders like OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Google’s Sundar Pichai, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made the list, it was the magazine’s cover that ignited conversation across social media. Anil Kapoor made it to TIME magazine’s AI cover, surprising many in both the tech and entertainment industries.

The cover of TIME’s AI edition took many by surprise. It included Indian actor Anil Kapoor, Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson, YouTuber Marques Brownlee, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, while tech giants like Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg were notably absent. While many tech giants were featured, Anil Kapoor made it to TIME magazine’s AI cover, raising questions about the selection process. The exclusion of such prominent figures, especially Altman, who played a pivotal role in popularizing AI through OpenAI’s ChatGPT, led to widespread criticism and speculation online.

Social Media Reactions: Criticism and Theories

Critics questioned why Anil Kapoor made it to TIME magazine’s AI cover, given his background in the film industry rather than technology. Social media users were quick to react to the unconventional cover choices. One X (formerly Twitter) user, Hemant Mohapatra, questioned the absence of Altman and Musk, comparing it to dubious MBA rankings. Another post sarcastically remarked that Scarlett Johansson is “definitely more influential than Sam Altman when it comes to generative AI.” Several users expressed confusion, with one asking, “How in the world do you do a cover on the hundred most important people in AI and not have Sam Altman?”

Some speculated that the unusual cover was a deliberate attempt to generate buzz. A user named Bob Theisen suggested that TIME aimed to spark discussion by featuring unexpected figures like Kapoor and Johansson. This strategy seemed to work, as the cover quickly went viral.

A Bold Move by TIME?

While TIME’s list of the most influential in AI includes heavyweights from the tech industry, the cover’s focus on figures from the entertainment world has raised eyebrows. Some have criticized the magazine for overlooking the pioneers directly involved in AI’s development, but others see it as a clever strategy to generate attention and highlight AI’s impact on various industries beyond technology.

Scarlett Johansson, another surprising figure on the cover, has also been involved in AI-related disputes. In 2023, Johansson was reportedly approached by OpenAI’s Sam Altman to incorporate her voice into AI systems. She rejected the offer, expressing discomfort with the potential implications for her likeness and voice being used by technology.

Anil Kapoor’s Inclusion in TIME’s AI List Tied to Legal Battle

Anil Kapoor’s appearance in TIME magazine’s AI list stems from a legal case he pursued last year in the Delhi High Court. The court ruled in his favor, preventing unauthorized use of his name, image, voice, and other aspects of his personality for commercial purposes. Kapoor’s plea to the court highlighted the exploitation of his celebrity rights, particularly by websites and platforms misusing his persona.

A significant concern in Kapoor’s petition was the potential misuse of his likeness through artificial intelligence. The Delhi High Court acknowledged the growing threat posed by AI tools that could replicate a celebrity’s persona without consent. The court noted that such tools could imitate his likeness, voice, and image in ways that could be offensive, especially in unauthorized or inappropriate content. The misuse of Kapoor’s image on websites, particularly in harmful or derogatory contexts, was a critical issue in this legal battle. The court’s interim order emphasized the right of celebrities to protect their identity from such unauthorized use. This aspect of AI exploitation contributed to Kapoor’s recognition on the TIME list.
