While artificial intelligence (AI) has been in the spotlight, there’s another exciting trend developing in the tech world: mixed-reality devices. Do you know that Apple has recently launched its Vision Pro XR headset earlier this year? Now, Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm are getting something even more interesting—a set of smart glasses that could redefine the VR field.
New XR Device Gadget
Qualcomm’s chief executive officer Cristiano Amon was asked detailed questions in a recent Interview. Speaking to an interviewer, Qualcomm’s chief executive officer Cristiano Amon said that his company has a working partnership with Samsung and Google. He alluded that this juicy collaboration will reveal a novel yet invigorating offering soon and it could well be the AR smart glasses.
Moreover, while Apple opted for the large, head-mounted XR headset with the Vision Pro, Samsung and Qualcomm chose a slender, easily transportable VR device that can be considered pocket-sized.
Instead of walking around with an alien look-alike bulky headset, imagine putting on a pair of glasses that look like Ray Bans with an added advantage.
What’s the big deal with these smart glasses?
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Smart glasses? Aren’t those just a fad?” Well, Cristiano Amon has a different opinion on this. The goal is to make smart glasses as universally accepted as a phone – something that you do not even think twice about using. Amon wants these glasses to be snatched in the same way that people would snatch their sunglasses before moving out.
Simplicity at its best, no fuss, no bulky headsets, just light, fashionable wearable technology.
It’s not just to look awesome either (although it does sound fun, doesn’t it?). These glasses are going to be packed with some pretty heavy tech. Amon said that there would be AI features incorporated into the glasses. Some of the AI magic happens right on the device, while others are handled on the phone or even off-site.
What About the Competition?
Thus, where does this bring those top global giants like Apple? Apple Vision Pro is now available, but one of the issues it has is that the product is bulky. Samsung and Qualcomm have chosen another strategy by going with portability.
Their aim? To make an item that is light and comfortable, which one can wear daily. Consider it like applying for a job and getting a promotion—both useful but one is much more convenient when on the go.
Amon even said that their next glasses will be even better than the Ray-Ban smart glasses released by Meta. This has to be a pair of glasses that people can casually wear, just like a pair of their regular eyeglasses.
When Can We Anticipate Such Glasses?
When can I get these glasses off the shelves? Although we are yet to receive confirmation about the actual launch date, rumors have it that Samsung’s XR is expected to be launched this year. There are some indications that it might be released together with the Galaxy Tab S10 series in October, however, we could only be offered the revised developer version as of today, with the full-fledged commercial launch to be expected no earlier than in early 2025.
In any case, it is evident that Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm are thinking big here, and not in the short term. It’s not about catching an XR trend—they want to change the way we perceive mixed reality in our daily lives.
