Nearly a decade after private telecom players, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is poised to launch 4G services across India by June 2025. This long-awaited upgrade is set in motion courtesy of a landmark partnership with Tejas Networks, a Tata Group company, which completed its ₹7,492 crore contract to supply equipment for over 1 lakh 4G and 5G sites. This ambitious deployment represents one of the world’s largest single-vendor Radio Access Network (RAN) projects, crafted in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), and BSNL itself. The 4G launch aims to elevate BSNL’s competitiveness and enhance telecom access, especially in underserved regions.

Leveraging Infrastructure for Future 5G Upscale:

BSNL’s 4G rollout is designed with foresight: the network will eventually transition to 5G utilizing the same infrastructure, enabling a smooth technology upgrade without major overhauls. This strategic approach not only keeps BSNL in line with evolving telecom trends but promises an affordable and scalable pathway to modernize India’s telecommunications landscape. The new network is expected to provide improved connectivity, faster data speeds, and lower latency, aligning with India’s digital transformation goals and supporting emerging applications in IoT, smart cities, and e-governance.

Tata’s Tejas Networks: Backbone of BSNL’s Network Expansion

Tejas Networks stands at the center of this telecom transformation, showcasing remarkable growth with revenues tripling to ₹8,923 crore in the 2024-25 fiscal year. Despite a minor quarterly loss, the company’s net profit of ₹446.5 crore reflects robust demand and execution capabilities. A strategic partnership with Japan’s NEC Corporation strengthens Tejas’s wireless and core network technology capabilities, further strengthening their global footprint. Beyond BSNL, Tejas is also working with Vodafone Idea and exploring indigenous projects like Rail Kavach, underlining its expanding role in India’s telecom sector.

Rural Connectivity Boosted by BSNL’s Indigenous 4G Network:

BSNL’s 4G rollout is expected to make a significant impact on rural and underserved regions across India, bridging the digital divide that has long limited opportunities in these areas. Under the government’s ambitious 4G Saturation Scheme, nearly 98,000 new sites will provide coverage to previously uncovered villages, ensuring millions gain access to high-speed mobile internet for the first time. Equipped with solar-powered towers and cloud-based software, BSNL’s network will offer reliable connectivity even in remote locations, supporting essential services like healthcare, education, and digital governance. This initiative not only enhances communication but also empowers rural communities with greater access to digital tools and economic opportunities, marking a critical step in India’s path toward inclusive digital growth.

Broader Impact and Future Outlook for Indian Telecom:

BSNL’s 4G rollout represents more than just a network update; it’s a major step in closing India’s digital divide, especially for rural and remote customers who have previously had few telecom options. Additionally, by partnering with Tejas Networks of Tata, telecom infrastructure is becoming more independent and less reliant on outside suppliers. The government’s ambition of a connected India is something that BSNL hopes to promote and regain market share with future 5G scalability and ongoing investments. Such projects offer improved consumer experiences, technical innovation, and strengthened digital ecosystems across the country as the telecom sector evolves.
