With the looming possibility of a U.S. TikTok ban, ByteDance’s sister app Lemon8 is gaining momentum as creators and users seek alternatives. Lemon8, a hybrid platform combining TikTok’s dynamic short-form videos with Instagram and Pinterest’s aesthetic appeal, has become a hot topic. Its rise comes at a critical moment when TikTok’s future in the U.S. faces uncertainty.
Lemon8 is owned by China-based ByteDance, the same company behind TikTok and other popular apps like the video editor CapCut and the art editing tool Hypic. Unlike TikTok, which has over 170 million U.S. users, Lemon8 remains a relatively new player in the social media landscape. It first launched in Asian markets before arriving in the U.S. in 2023.
While it initially had a modest presence, recent months have seen a surge in interest. Lemon8 was one of the top-ranking free apps on Apple’s App Store in December 2024. The app’s rising popularity coincides with the ongoing debate over TikTok’s U.S. operations, which may be shut down if ByteDance does not divest from the platform.
Creators Push Lemon8 as TikTok’s Future Hangs in the Balance
Content creators have played a significant role in Lemon8’s growing popularity. ByteDance previously partnered with influencers to promote Lemon8 on TikTok, and in recent weeks, many creators have endorsed the app as a viable alternative in case TikTok is banned. Using hashtags like #lemon8partner, some influencers are engaging in sponsored campaigns to encourage downloads.
However, there’s a catch. The law targeting TikTok also applies broadly to other ByteDance-owned apps, including Lemon8 and CapCut. While these apps are not explicitly mentioned in the statute, their association with ByteDance makes them equally vulnerable to potential bans.
Jasmine Enberg, an analyst at Emarketer, notes that many creators pushing Lemon8 may not realize the legal implications for ByteDance’s other apps. ByteDance has not publicly addressed whether Lemon8 or CapCut would be affected if the ban on TikTok proceeds.
Key Features of Lemon8
Lemon8 distinguishes itself with a blend of content discovery features. Similar to TikTok, the app offers two main feeds: a “Following” section for posts from creators users follow and a “For You” section for algorithm-driven recommendations. It also organizes posts into various categories, such as relationships, wellness, and skincare.
In November 2024, ByteDance integrated Lemon8 with TikTok, allowing users to access both platforms using the same account. This feature simplifies cross-posting and aims to expand creators’ reach. ByteDance hopes this integration will help Lemon8 attract TikTok’s established user base.
Although Lemon8’s user base is still small compared to TikTok’s, it has experienced notable growth. Data from Sensor Tower indicates that Lemon8 had 12.5 million global monthly active users by late December 2024, with approximately 1 million daily active users in the U.S.
The platform saw a dramatic increase in global downloads in December, growing by 150% month-over-month. The U.S. accounted for 70% of these downloads. On December 19, Lemon8 experienced its highest single-day download numbers, coinciding with the Supreme Court’s announcement to hear arguments on the TikTok ban’s constitutionality.
The U.S. government’s concerns about TikTok center on national security and potential data misuse. Lawmakers and Biden administration officials worry that ByteDance could be compelled to share user data with Beijing or manipulate algorithms to promote propaganda.
If the Supreme Court upholds the law requiring TikTok to sever ties with ByteDance or face a U.S. ban, TikTok plans to shut down its U.S. operations by January 19, 2025. This scenario could leave a void for other apps like Lemon8 to fill—if they are not also swept up in the ban.
Despite its recent gains, Lemon8 faces significant challenges. As a ByteDance-owned app, its future in the U.S. is intertwined with TikTok’s fate. If TikTok is banned, Lemon8 may also come under scrutiny, potentially stalling its growth.
Moreover, while Lemon8’s unique blend of features appeals to users, its long-term success depends on user retention and differentiation from competitors like Instagram and Pinterest.
