The Confident Group has filed a police complaint alleging that intense pressure may have played a role in real estate billionaire CJ Roy’s decision to commit suicide, in a fascinating and tragic development surrounding his sudden death. The accusation claims that Roy, the chairman of the Confident Group, had a conversation with his mother just prior to the deadly incident at his Bengaluru office on January 30, 2026, while Income Tax Department representatives were on the premises. The sequence of events and circumstances leading up to his death have drawn extensive attention and generated serious concerns about the pressures experienced by business leaders under public scrutiny. The family and firm have requested a thorough investigation into this matter.

Roy was found dead inside his cabin at the group’s office on Langford Road, Langford Town, where he had reportedly arrived to give a statement to tax authorities. The complaint, filed at Ashok Nagar police station in central Bengaluru by Confident Group Managing Director T.A. Joseph, laid out a timeline that several observers describe as alarming and worthy of closer scrutiny.

According to the complaint, Roy entered his cabin around 3 p.m. on January 30 after arriving with Joseph to respond to queries from the Income Tax Department. Before his death, Roy informed Joseph that he wished to speak with his mother, prompting the latter to step out of the cabin to allow him privacy. About ten minutes later, team members were told by security that Roy had instructed them not to permit anyone into the cabin. Following another interval with no response to repeated knocks on the locked door, staff forced the cabin open and discovered Roy inside, seated with blood visible on his shirt. An ambulance was immediately called, but he was declared dead after being rushed to Narayana Hospital in HSR Layout.

Police Investigations and Pressure Allegations:

Following the discovery, Bengaluru police registered an unnatural death report and are treating the case as a cabable suicide while conducting a thorough investigation. A special investigation team (SIT) was formed to probe the matter in detail, led by senior police officials. Police have said that several aspects including what happened before the incident, the exact location of the firearm discharge, and possible links to ongoing proceedings need close examination. The pistol used in the incident, believed to be a licensed weapon, has been seized and sent for forensic analysis to establish technical and ballistic specifics.

City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh emphasised that the investigation will be comprehensive and methodical. Authorities are cooperating with all relevant departments to ensure that the truth behind the tragic incident is established. Early reports indicate that the injury was a single, close-range gunshot wound to the chest, and that only one round was fired, suggesting a point-blank discharge. However, technical and ballistics reports are still awaited to corroborate these details.

Although the police have stated that no formal accusation has yet been made against the Income Tax officials, Joseph’s complaint calls on authorities to investigate the possibility that intense pressure contributed to what Roy called a “step too far.” Senior Karnataka officials, including Home Minister G. Parameshwara, have instructed police to carry out a thorough investigation into all circumstances surrounding the incident during the ongoing investigation. They have also emphasized that any valid concerns raised, including those pertaining to official conduct, will be investigated if the evidence supports it.

Family Statements and Allegations:

Roy’s family members have also publicly spoken about the pressure the real estate leader may have been enduring in the days leading up to his death. Roy’s brother, CJ Babu, told reporters that his sibling had spoken to him on the morning of January 30 and had sounded normal, albeit with concerns about pressure from the Income Tax department. Babu recounted that his brother mentioned the stress he had been under over the previous days, underscoring that financial or business issues were not problematic on their face. Family members have also indicated they are seeking clear answers from authorities on what exactly transpired during the proceedings that afternoon.

The case has also drawn political and public interest, with some leaders expressing concern over the conduct of investigative agencies. Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge described the incident as a case of harassment by Income Tax officials, prompting broader debate over the role and approach of central investigative agencies when interacting with business leaders and industrialists. While the official stance remains that investigations are ongoing and open-ended, these allegations have heightened public scrutiny over the methods and conduct of such searches.

Legacy and Industry Impact:

Confident Group was founded by CJ Roy and became a well-known real estate developer with projects across South India. Known for his leadership in real estate and engagement with high-profile events and media presence, Roy’s death has sent ripple effects through the industry and sparked conversations about the mental health pressures faced by business executives, especially during intense official scrutiny.

The circumstances of Roy’s final hours particularly his request to speak with his mother before the fatal act have been widely reported and have drawn emotional responses from the public. The company’s insistence on a detailed investigation reflects both the family’s and the firm’s desire to get to the bottom of events that led to the tragic loss. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on obtaining a clear and factual account of what happened, ensuring accountability, and identifying any lessons that can prevent similar tragedies in future.  In the coming days, police are expected to release more detailed findings as forensic, ballistics, and procedural investigations conclude. Until then, the case remains a poignant reminder of the human costs that can accompany high-stakes legal and financial scrutiny in corporate India.
