Once again, the price of fuel is going up, and the long queues outside the Costco fuel stations prove that everybody is trying to save a few rupees or dollars when it comes to buying a full tank of fuel. But now, Costco is going one step further with fuel stations having no warehouse along with them.
It has been dealing with fuel sales since 1995. It adopts the exact strategy that it applies to all other products it deals with. Keep the cost minimum. Avoid any frills. Sell at an attractive price. And then earn by charging membership fees.
The new stations push that idea even further. The first one, set to open in Mission Viejo, California, will have 40 pumps and nothing else. No store. No snacks. No impulse buys. Just fuel at a lower price. You need a membership card to use it.
That last part matters. Costco is strict about access. The company has already cracked down on shared memberships. These fuel stations double down on that rule. If you need affordable fuel, then you have to pay for entry.
This might seem restrictive, but it is part of the system. Unlike other stores, Costco is not interested in attracting people through its doors. Rather, it creates loyalty. Customers come back time and time again because the numbers work for them.
And the numbers are the whole game.

Fuel prices currently sit at a premium level. The average price of regular fuel in America currently stands at over $4 per gallon. This number varies depending on the state. Costco usually charges at least $0.20 to $0.40 per gallon below the market average.
That difference adds up fast. Fill a large SUV with a 20–25 gallon tank, and you might save $8 to $12 in one visit. Do that a few times each month, and the savings can cover the cost of a basic membership.
Of course, there is a catch. Time.
People often wait 10 to 20 minutes in line at Costco pumps. That wait can cancel out part of the savings, especially if your car burns fuel while idling. Still, many drivers accept the trade-off. The lower price feels worth it.
As Gary Millerchip noted in a recent earnings call, higher prices push people to go out of their way for a better deal. In simple terms, when gas gets expensive, people chase discounts.
The standalone stations are built for that behaviour. More pumps mean shorter lines. A larger layout means faster flow. Without a store, there is no distraction. Drivers pull in, fill up, and leave.
It is a high-volume system. Think of it as a factory line for fuel.

This move also shows how Costco sees the future. It is not trying to compete with full-service gas stations or travel centers. It does not want to be everything. It wants to be the cheapest reliable option for a specific need.
That focus is rare. Many retailers try to add services and upsell customers. Costco strips things away. It trusts that price alone can bring people in.
There is also a quiet risk. Fuel demand will change over time. Electric vehicles are growing, even if slowly. Over the long term, gas stations may lose some relevance. But for now, demand remains strong, and price still drives behavior.
Costco is betting that this window will last long enough to scale the model. Reports suggest more standalone stations could follow in places like Hawaii and Michigan. If the first locations succeed, expansion will come fast.
So, is it worth it for the average driver?
That depends on your habits. If you drive often and live near a Costco station, the savings can be real. If you rarely fill up or hate waiting in line, the benefit shrinks.
In the end, Costco is not changing the fuel market. It is refining its own system. Low margin, high volume, member-first.
No frills. No gimmicks. Just cheaper gas, if you are willing to wait a bit and pay to belong.
