Digital licence plates were first used as a trial programme in California, but they are now available to everyone in the state who wants one. All Californians will now be able to use a digital licence plate as a result of a recently passed statute (AB-984).

There is only one business from whom you can choose to get a digital licence plate: Reviver. According to Reviver, the pilot program’s estimated 10,000 California cars currently have its licence plates on the road. As word spreads that a new law allowing anyone to buy them has been passed, that number will definitely rise.

Digital plates from Reviver employ a monochromatic HD display that can be switched between light and dark settings in case you haven’t seen or heard of them before (black or white background).

They run on batteries, with a five-year battery life according to Reviver, but if you’re a commercial customer, Reviver provides a hardwired system that draws power from the 12-volt battery of the car.

Why might you desire one? The most important factor is probably appearance. Maybe you prefer the monochrome appearance of your car to any of the other accessible licence plate options.

Additionally, you have the option of writing a customised message that appears on the plate’s lower third. The process of “renewal” can be programmed to occur automatically, giving your digital display the year and month that your registration is good for — no sticker necessary.

Family services and alerts, stolen vehicle reporting and recovery spots, tolling system connection, vehicle diagnostic and maintenance alerts, additional DMV transactions, and integration with parking and other payment services are among the features Reviver claims are on the way.

What is the total cost of this to you? As of right now, you can only subscribe to the plate, which will cost you $19.95 a month for 48 months. The price for a four-year subscription in one lump sum is $215.40. The cost of the hardwired commercial plate is $24.95 per month or $275.40 over four years. The mentioned plate costs $150 to have professionally installed.
