Elon Musk is preparing to launch Grok 3 AI, positioning it as a competitor to OpenAI and Google. Elon Musk has announced that Grok 3, his advanced AI chatbot, is nearing completion. During a video call at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Musk revealed that Grok 3 showcases exceptional reasoning abilities, outperforming all existing AI models in tests. The chatbot is expected to launch soon.
Grok 3 is being developed by xAI, Musk’s AI-focused company. It aims to compete with AI solutions from OpenAI, backed by Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOGL) AI tools. Musk, who was a co-founder of OpenAI, has positioned Grok 3 as a powerful alternative in the rapidly evolving AI industry.
Legal Battle with OpenAI and $97.4 Billion Offer
Musk is currently involved in a legal dispute with OpenAI. In August, he filed a lawsuit against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and others to prevent the company from becoming a for-profit entity. This week, Musk and a group of investors offered $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI’s nonprofit assets.
OpenAI has expressed the need to transition to a for-profit model to secure the necessary funding for its AI projects. However, Musk’s legal actions and acquisition offer reflect his opposition to this move.
Musk’s history with OpenAI is complex. He was a part of the initial team that pledged $1 billion to the development of OpenAI and ChatGPT in 2019. However, he left the organization due to differences in vision. Musk wanted to integrate OpenAI’s technology into his electric vehicle company, Tesla, but the team chose a different path.
Strategic Moves and Government Efficiency Plans
Apart from his AI ventures, Musk also shared his views on economic growth and government spending. Appointed by former U.S. President Donald Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk proposed strategic cuts that could reduce government spending by about $1 trillion. He argued that these cuts could boost the economy by 4-5% without triggering inflation from 2025 to 2026.
At the summit, Musk also commented on U.S. foreign policy, criticizing the country’s interventionist approach and suggesting a shift towards domestic issues. His remarks came amid controversial statements by Trump concerning the Gaza Strip.
During the World Government Summit, UAE AI Minister Omar Al Olama announced a collaboration with Musk on the “Dubai Loop” project. This high-speed underground transport system is described by Musk as a “wormhole,” but details remain scarce.
xAI’s Expansion Plans and Grok’s Features
Elon Musk is preparing to launch Grok 3 AI, aiming to disrupt the AI industry with advanced features. Musk’s company, xAI, developed Grok 3 using the Colossus Supercluster, a supercomputer based in Memphis, Tennessee. According to reports, xAI plans to hire thousands of AI tutors this year to further train the chatbot. Currently, xAI has around 900 employees.
Grok is integrated with the social media platform X but can also be accessed through a web-based tool and mobile apps for iOS and Android. Although the initial version of Grok was open-source, later versions have been closed-sourced and proprietary. The chatbot remains exclusive to X users, which could limit its market reach.
Musk faces stiff competition in the AI industry, particularly from Chinese startup DeepSeek. The company’s R1 reasoning model has gained popularity as an open-source and cost-effective AI solution. However, DeepSeek has encountered regulatory challenges, including bans in several countries and restrictions on government devices in U.S. states like Texas and New York. As Elon Musk prepares to launch Grok 3 AI, he claims it has superior reasoning capabilities.
