First IPO Application? Here’s Everything You Need Ready Beforehand
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

Applying for an IPO for the first time can feel more complicated than it actually is. There are dates to track, a price band to understand, a lot size to check, and payment instructions to follow. The easiest way to avoid last-minute confusion is to get the basics sorted before the issue opens.

You do not need to be an experienced investor to apply. But you should have the right accounts, details, and funds ready, and understand how the application process works.

Keep an Eye on the Upcoming IPO Details

If you are planning to apply for an upcoming IPO, start by checking the issue details. Note the opening and closing dates, price band, lot size, and minimum application amount.

Also check the company’s offer document before applying. It contains information about the business, financial performance, risks, and how the IPO proceeds will be used.

Do not leave this research until the final day. Having the basic information ready gives you enough time to decide whether the IPO actually fits your investment goals.

Make Sure Your Demat Account Is Active

A demat account is essential for an IPO because shares allotted to investors are credited electronically. SEBI’s investor guidance states that an active demat account is required for IPO applications.

If you already have one, check that:

  • Your account is active.
  • Your PAN details are correct.
  • Your bank account is linked properly.
  • Your registered mobile number and email address are updated.
  • Your KYC details are complete.

If you do not have an account yet, complete the demat account opening process well before the IPO closes. Leaving it until the last minute can create unnecessary problems if verification or activation takes longer than expected.

Keep Your PAN and Personal Details Ready

Your PAN is one of the key details required when applying for an IPO. Make sure the name and other information in your application match the details associated with your demat account.

For joint applications, the order of names should also match the relevant demat account details. Incorrect information can lead to application-related issues. ([Securities and Exchange Board of India][2])

Check these details before the IPO opens, rather than discovering an error when you try to submit the application.

Have Enough Money in Your Bank Account

You need sufficient funds to cover your IPO application.

For ASBA applications, the application amount is blocked in your bank account rather than immediately transferred to the company. If shares are allotted, the required amount is debited. If you receive no allotment or only a partial allotment, the corresponding blocked amount is released according to the applicable process. ([SEBI Investor][3])

So, before applying, check your available bank balance and make sure the required amount is accessible throughout the application process.

Do not assume that submitting the application means the money has already been deducted.

Set Up Your UPI Payment Method

Retail investors can apply for eligible public issues through the UPI mechanism under the applicable ASBA process. SEBI’s investor material explains that the UPI route allows the application amount to be blocked through a UPI mandate. ([SEBI Investor][4])

Before applying, make sure:

  • Your UPI ID is active.
  • The linked bank account has sufficient funds.
  • The UPI app and bank are supported for IPO applications.
  • Your mobile number is correctly linked.
  • You are comfortable approving the UPI mandate when it arrives.

Do not ignore the mandate notification after submitting your application. An application can be affected if the required mandate is not properly authorised.

Understand the IPO Lot Size

You cannot usually enter any amount you want when applying for a retail IPO. The issue specifies a lot size, which determines the minimum number of shares you can apply for.

For example, if the lot contains 20 shares and the upper end of the price band is ₹500, one lot would require ₹10,000.

If you want to apply for more than one lot, check the applicable limits and make sure you have enough funds available.

Knowing the lot size beforehand also makes it easier to calculate how much money will be blocked in your account.

Decide Whether You Want to Bid at the Cut-Off Price

Retail investors may be able to bid at the cut-off price in applicable book-built IPOs. This means you agree to pay the final issue price determined within the price band.

If you choose a specific price instead, your bid needs to fall within the permitted price range.

For first-time investors, understanding this choice before filling out the application can prevent mistakes.

Keep the Important IPO Dates Handy

IPO timelines are short, so keep the key dates somewhere easy to access.

Pay attention to:

  • IPO opening date
  • IPO closing date
  • UPI mandate approval deadline, where applicable
  • Allotment date
  • Refund or fund-release timeline
  • Listing date

Avoid waiting until the closing day if you can. Technical issues, payment problems, or a missed mandate can make a last-minute application unnecessarily stressful.

Use a Share Market App to Stay Organised

A share market app can make it easier to track IPO information, market updates and your investment account from one place.

The convenience is useful, but remember that an app is only a tool. Before applying, read the available IPO information and understand the company, valuation, and risks rather than making a decision based solely on market buzz.

Avoid Common First-Time IPO Mistakes

A few simple checks can prevent many avoidable errors.

Don’t use someone else’s bank account or UPI ID. SEBI’s investor guidance cautions against using third-party bank accounts or UPI IDs for IPO applications. ([Securities and Exchange Board of India][2])

Don’t ignore your UPI mandate. Submitting the application and approving the mandate are separate steps in the UPI process.

Don’t apply without checking your demat details. Enter your PAN and demat information correctly.

Don’t rely only on listing expectations. A popular IPO is not automatically a suitable investment.

Don’t stretch your finances to apply. Only use money you can comfortably keep blocked during the IPO process.

A Quick Checklist Before You Apply

Before submitting your first IPO application, make sure you have:

  • An active demat account
  • Updated PAN and KYC details
  • A linked bank account
  • An active, eligible UPI setup if using UPI
  • Enough funds for the application
  • The IPO price band and lot size
  • The opening and closing dates
  • A basic understanding of the company’s business and risks
  • The correct application details

Final Thoughts

Your first IPO application does not need to be complicated. Most of the work can be done before the issue even opens.

Get your demat account and payment method ready, check the IPO details, understand the lot size, and keep track of the important dates. More importantly, take some time to research the company before deciding to apply.

The application itself may take only a few minutes. The smarter move is to make sure those few minutes come after you have done your homework.
