Fans have been asking for it since the very first Forza Horizon: a Japanese playground for the franchise’s open-world racing festival. Now it’s official. At the Xbox Tokyo Game Show, Playground Games confirmed Forza Horizon 6 will launch in 2026, five years after its Mexico-themed predecessor. The new installment takes players to Japan, with the first teaser ending on an iconic shot of Mount Fuji framed by cherry blossoms.
“Japan has been top of Horizon fans’ wish lists,” said Don Arceta, art director at Playground Games. “We’re excited to finally be bringing this much-requested location to players.”
From Neon Tokyo to Quiet Mountain Roads
The studio promises the most diverse environments the series has seen so far. Tokyo will be recreated with neon-lit streets, skyscrapers, and elevated highways—systems inspired in part by the Hot Wheels expansion from Forza Horizon 5. The countryside offers a sharp contrast, with peaceful rice fields, mountain passes, and forested roads that recall the birthplace of touge drifting.
Cultural consultant Kyoko Yamashita, who is working with the team, said the setting isn’t just about geography. “Japan has such a unique culture—from cars, to music, to fashion—that make it perfect for the next Horizon setting.” The commitment suggests that authenticity, not just spectacle, will drive design choices.
A Celebration of Japanese Car Culture
While specifics remain under wraps, Arceta hinted at a broad vehicle roster: kei cars, vans, and iconic drift machines alongside global favorites. Japan’s automotive identity has long revolved around creativity and community, whether through heavily modified tuner cars, family-oriented vans, or the country’s love of motorsport. Expect the game to spotlight these elements with the same enthusiasm that Forza Horizon 5 brought to off-road racing in Mexico.
Drifting, in particular, feels destined for a starring role. From mountain switchbacks to inner-city loops, the landscape is practically designed to showcase sideways driving. The franchise has always catered to drifting fans, but Japan gives it a natural home.
Built for Next-Gen, Available Everywhere
Forza Horizon 6 will be released on Xbox Series X and S, as well as PC through Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox Play Anywhere, and Steam. It will join Game Pass at launch, making it instantly accessible to subscribers. In a twist, Microsoft confirmed the game will eventually land on PlayStation 5 after launch, part of Xbox’s strategy to broaden its ecosystem beyond its own consoles.
Horizon Meets GTA VI in 2026
The release year makes for a crowded calendar. Grand Theft Auto VI is also slated for 2026, and while the two titles differ in focus, both promise expansive open worlds centered on cars. For racing fans, that means 2026 may go down as a landmark year.
More Questions Than Answers
No release date has been given yet, and details on multiplayer, seasonal events, and customization remain tightly guarded. But if early signs hold true, Forza Horizon 6 won’t just be another racing game—it will be a cultural tour of Japan, with the roar of engines set against neon skylines and cherry blossoms.
