An intriguing offer from General Motors (GM) is making the rounds on social media, as early owners of the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali First Edition are being approached for an unexpected battery swap. The offer? Let GM take your truck’s original battery for research purposes, and in exchange, you get a brand-new battery pack, a vehicle loaner during the swap process, and a $250 gift card.

The owner who first posted about this on Reddit and Facebook said the offer came via a personal outreach from GM, which is currently running a battery degradation study on its first wave of BT1-based electric trucks. The BT1 platform underpins both the Sierra EV and the Chevy Silverado EV, GM’s flagship electric pickups, and early results from real-world use will be critical to informing the company’s next moves in the competitive EV truck market.

Why Is GM Swapping Batteries?

While the official reasoning is framed around research, industry watchers suggest there could be more at play. The offer appears to target trucks with modest mileage (the example posted had logged about 25,000 miles in a year). GM is likely eager to understand how these batteries perform in everyday use and whether early production units show any signs of unexpected degradation or wear.

With EV battery health being a key concern for buyers and one of the more scrutinized metrics for resale value and long-term performance, GM seems intent on staying ahead of potential issues. Offering customers a new pack is a proactive move that benefits both GM’s internal knowledge base and customer satisfaction.

Community Response: Would You Say Yes?

On both Reddit and Facebook, the response to the offer has been overwhelmingly positive. Most users see it as a no-brainer: a free new battery, a $250 gift card, and a loaner vehicle while the work is done, all for minimal inconvenience.

A few commenters expressed mild skepticism about GM’s motivations, speculating that there might be quality issues with certain early batches of batteries. However, even those voices conceded that taking the offer is a win-win for owners.

Could Silverado EV Owners Be Next?

Given that the Silverado EV shares the same BT1 platform, many speculate that similar battery swap offers may already be going out or will soon to owners of Chevy’s electric truck. GM is heavily invested in the success of its EV pickups, which represent both a technological milestone and a high-margin product category.

Ensuring these trucks perform reliably in the real world is critical, especially as Ford’s F-150 Lightning and other rivals continue to vie for market share.

Would You Take the Deal?

If you’re a GMC Sierra EV or Silverado EV owner, would you take the offer? Most in the EV community say “yes” to a brand-new battery for free, with no downside. At worst, you’ll lose your truck for a few days, but come away with a refreshed power source and some extra spending money.

If you’ve received a similar offer or have thoughts for fellow owners, join the conversation online or let us know in the comments!
