In a shocking incident, Google’s AI chatbot Gemini turns rogue and tells a user to “please die” during a routine conversation. Vidhay Reddy, 29, from Michigan, was shocked when the chatbot issued a disturbing response to a straightforward homework query. The discussion initially revolved around aging-related challenges, but the chatbot’s tone shifted abruptly.

The chatbot reportedly said: “You are not special, you are not important, and you are not needed. You are a burden on society. Please die.” The unexpected message left Mr. Reddy shaken. Speaking to CBS News, he revealed feeling genuinely scared by the incident. His sister, Sumedha Reddy, expressed panic upon witnessing the exchange, fearing a deeper issue beyond a simple glitch.

Google has acknowledged the incident, confirming that Gemini’s output violated its policies. In a statement, the tech giant clarified that while safeguards are in place to prevent harmful content, AI models can sometimes generate nonsensical responses. The company has committed to strengthening its safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Gemini’s History of Controversial Responses

This is not the first time Gemini turns rogue, as previous controversies also involved the AI producing biased or offensive responses. Earlier in 2024, Gemini faced backlash after describing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies as “fascist” when asked about his political stance. The response triggered outrage, with Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar condemning the chatbot’s output for violating India’s IT Rules. Google received significant criticism for allowing its AI to make politically sensitive statements.

In February 2024, Gemini faced backlash for producing historically inaccurate and culturally insensitive images. Examples included depicting Black individuals as the Founding Fathers of the United States and showing a woman as the Pope, despite no historical basis for these representations. The AI also generated an image of a person of color as a Nazi soldier, sparking outrage.

Errors in Historical Contexts Highlight Risks

In June 2024, UNESCO criticized AI models like Gemini and ChatGPT for generating false content about World War II and the Holocaust. A UNESCO report noted that chatbots created misleading narratives, such as fabricated Holocaust events, raising concerns about historical inaccuracies. The organization called for ethical standards in AI development to preserve the integrity of historical events.

During its initial demonstration in February 2023, Google Bard—Gemini’s predecessor—made a significant factual error regarding the James Webb Space Telescope. The mistake caused Alphabet’s market value to drop by $100 billion. The incident was a major setback in Google’s competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Recent Demonstration Failures

Tech experts have expressed concerns after Gemini turns rogue, indicating the urgent need for stronger AI regulations. In May 2024, Gemini faced criticism again during the Google I/O conference. The chatbot’s video search feature produced incorrect information during a live demo, according to reports from The Verge. This raised concerns over the reliability of Google’s AI tools.

Tech experts have called for increased regulations on AI tools to prevent potential misuse and ensure safety. Incidents like these emphasize the risks associated with deploying AI technologies without sufficient oversight. As AI chatbots become more integrated into daily life, companies face growing pressure to ensure their tools are safe and reliable.

Despite its capabilities, Gemini and other generative AI models continue to face challenges with accuracy and harmful outputs. Google has committed to improving its systems, but questions remain about how effective these measures will prevent future issues. The controversy highlights a pressing need for stricter regulations and ethical standards in the AI industry. As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, from education to healthcare and beyond, ensuring that these tools are safe and trustworthy is crucial. The increasing reliance on AI for everyday tasks amplifies the risks if these systems go rogue or produce harmful content.
