Understanding Loss of Pulse Detection

Cardiac arrest is a sudden loss of heart function, often occurring without warning. Immediate medical intervention is crucial, as survival rates decrease significantly with each passing minute. Google’s Loss of Pulse Detection aims to bridge the gap between the onset of such events and the arrival of medical help.

How Does Itt Work?

The Pixel Watch 3 utilizes a combination of sensors and advanced algorithms to monitor the wearer’s heart activity:

  • Photoplethysmography (PPG) Sensor: This sensor uses light to detect blood volume changes, continuously monitoring the heart rate.

  • Accelerometer: Detects movement, helping differentiate between a lack of pulse due to a cardiac event and situations like the watch being removed.

When the watch detects an absence of pulse, it initiates a series of checks:

  1. Secondary Sensor Activation: Infrared and red LEDs activate to confirm the absence of a pulse.

  2. User Responsiveness Check: The watch prompts the user for a response. If there’s no reply and no detected movement, it proceeds to the next step.

  3. Emergency Alert: An audible alarm sounds, accompanied by a countdown. If the user remains unresponsive, the watch automatically contacts emergency services, providing the user’s location and notifying them of the detected loss of pulse.

Development and Accuracy

Google collaborated with cardiac electrophysiologists and conducted extensive testing to ensure the feature’s reliability. By analyzing data from planned heart stoppages during medical procedures, they refined the algorithm to minimize false positives and provide timely detection of genuine emergencies.

Availability

The Loss of Pulse Detection feature was initially launched in select European countries and received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February 2025. The rollout in the U.S. is scheduled to begin at the end of March 2025.

Conclusion

The Google Pixel Watch 3’s Loss of Pulse Detection exemplifies the potential of wearable technology in healthcare. By combining continuous monitoring with automated emergency response, it offers users an added layer of safety, ensuring timely assistance during critical health events.
