Yossi Matias, Google’s Head of Research, believes that in a world increasingly dominated by AI, the value of learning to code still needs to be improved. Google’s research head suggests that coding is still important, despite AI tools becoming more prevalent in automating routine tasks. During a conversation with Business Insider, Matias emphasized that coding is still vital, even with AI tools rapidly transforming the tech landscape. He stressed that mastering coding basics is essential for understanding the technological backbone of modern industries.

“The fundamentals are just as important today,” Matias remarked. “Everyone should learn how to code.” Despite advancements in AI, he argued that programming skills will continue to hold value, especially as AI-driven technologies become more prevalent across sectors.

AI’s Impact on Junior Developers

The rise of AI tools like GitHub Copilot, which can generate code based on prompts, has sparked concerns among software engineers. These tools reportedly reduce coding time by up to 70%, according to a Microsoft manager cited in the interview. However, Matias remains confident that AI won’t replace human developers entirely. Instead, AI serves as an assistant, handling repetitive tasks while leaving the more complex and creative aspects to humans.

Matias acknowledged that AI advancements present challenges for junior developers. Traditionally, newcomers learned through hands-on coding tasks. With AI automating many of these tasks, junior engineers face new hurdles in gaining practical experience. To address this, Google is supporting programs that help young developers acquire essential skills in the evolving tech landscape.

Coding: A Fundamental Skill Beyond Tech

Matias likened coding to basic mathematics, emphasizing that understanding the principles behind programming is crucial for everyone, not just aspiring software engineers. In his view, coding is a foundational skill that empowers people to better engage with the digital world.

Even with AI advancements, Google’s research head suggests that coding is still important because it forms the basis of understanding how these technologies work. “Even if AI tools can handle certain coding tasks, a fundamental understanding of coding is necessary,” he explained. The goal is not necessarily to become a software developer but to comprehend the systems driving today’s technologies.

AI Enhancing Fields Beyond Technology

Matias sees a future where AI’s influence extends beyond software development into fields like healthcare, biology, and education. He highlighted Google’s AI-driven initiatives, such as flood forecasting and healthcare image classification, which have the potential to save lives by providing critical real-time data. In light of AI’s growing influence, Google’s research head suggests that coding is still important.

In education, Matias envisions AI tools transforming learning experiences, making them more interactive and personalized. He believes that understanding basic coding will be key for individuals to fully leverage AI’s benefits across industries. As AI continues to evolve, foundational skills like coding will enable professionals to adapt and thrive in an AI-powered world.

The Future of Coding in an AI-Driven World

Despite AI’s rapid progress, Matias stressed that technology should be seen as a complement, not a replacement, for human expertise. He noted that even at Google, where AI assists in generating nearly a quarter of its code, human review and validation remain crucial.

AI will undoubtedly impact numerous fields, but mastering core skills like coding will remain indispensable. According to Matias, as AI tools streamline routine tasks, understanding the fundamentals will empower individuals to innovate and push technological boundaries.

Matias’s remarks also highlight a pressing concern for junior developers. The automation of beginner-level tasks by AI tools poses challenges for new entrants to the tech industry. Traditionally, these simpler assignments were how juniors gained hands-on experience and honed their skills. Now, with AI taking over those tasks, the opportunity for learning through real-world practice is shrinking.
