A newly launched government website, Waste.gov, meant to highlight waste-cutting efforts, has been abruptly locked down after reports revealed it was filled with placeholder text from a WordPress template rather than actual content.
The site, registered last week, prominently displayed the tagline “Tracking government waste”. However, visitors quickly noticed that instead of providing information on spending cuts, the page contained details about a fictional architecture firm called Études. The text, lifted directly from a WordPress demo page, described Études as a firm that “seamlessly merges creativity and functionality to redefine architectural excellence,” completely unrelated to government waste.
Elon Musk’s Transparency Pledge Undermined
The revelation comes shortly after Elon Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), assured the public that all waste-cutting efforts were being documented transparently online. Speaking from the Oval Office, Musk stated, “We actually are trying to be as transparent as possible. We post our actions to the DOGE handle on X and to the DOGE website.”
Despite this claim, the DOGE website itself contains little more than a slogan: “The people voted for major reform.” The department does post occasional updates on X (formerly Twitter), but most details about its operations have surfaced through media reports rather than official channels.
Adding to the confusion, another government site, DEI.gov, was also discovered to redirect to Waste.gov, raising questions about its actual purpose.
Website’s Content Contradicts Administration’s Policies
Before it was locked behind a password-protected wall, Waste.gov appeared to contradict President Donald Trump’s executive orders, which have sought to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives from government operations.
The placeholder text from the WordPress template described the imaginary Études firm as serving a “diverse clientele” and being committed to “innovation and sustainability.” These references stand in stark contrast to the administration’s stance on climate change and DEI-related programs, which have been systematically removed from government websites.
Transparency advocates have expressed concerns over the hastily created and poorly managed site. Critics argue that if the administration is truly focused on efficiency, such an oversight undermines its credibility.
DOGE’s Lack of Public Information Raises Concerns
The Department of Government Efficiency was created to oversee and eliminate wasteful government spending. However, its lack of publicly available information has fueled skepticism. The DOGE website features nothing more than a dollar sign image and a tagline, offering no details about its operations.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Digital Service, a government agency responsible for modernizing federal technology, was quietly renamed the U.S. DOGE Service but has seen little activity since Trump took office.
Investigations reveal that Waste.gov was built using the “Entrepreneur” demo version of WordPress’s default Twenty Twenty-Four theme. The theme, designed for small businesses and bloggers, appears to have been hastily repurposed for a federal initiative without any meaningful updates.
News of the unfinished and misleading website has sparked backlash from watchdog groups and government transparency advocates. Many argue that launching a non-functional website only raises more questions about the administration’s commitment to cutting government waste.
As of now, both Waste.gov and DEI.gov remain inaccessible, and the White House has yet to provide an official explanation for the incident.
Despite Musk’s pledge of transparency, the incident has only deepened concerns over the administration’s lack of accountability and openness.
