Honda Prelude is Back, and It’s a Premium Hybrid Coupe

After years of rumors, teasers, and prototype leaks, Honda has finally brought the Prelude back. The new model, revealed in Japan, isn’t just a nostalgic nod to the past, it’s a hybrid coupe with a premium twist. And yes, it comes with a price tag that turns heads: ¥6,179,800 ($41,700), making it one of the priciest cars in Honda’s lineup.

More Than Just a Civic in Disguise

The new Prelude shares its underpinnings with the Civic, but Honda has gone all-in on style, handling, and features to make it feel special. Buyers can pick from Flame Red or Crystal Black Pearl at no extra cost, while more exclusive shades like Meteoroid Gray Metallic and Moonlit Pearl come with small premiums. There’s even a limited Honda ON edition with a black roof and mirror caps, priced at ¥6,480,000 ($43,700).

Its design takes cues from gliders, giving it a sleek, low-profile look. The wing-shaped LED headlights stretch across the front, meeting at a slim grille, while 19-inch black alloy wheels with blue brake calipers add a sporty punch.

Interior Comfort Meets Tech

Inside, the Prelude blends Civic and Acura Integra elements but adds its own charm. It’s a 2+2 setup, designed to make both driver and passenger feel special. The driver’s seat is all about support, while the passenger seat wraps you in comfort. A hatchback-style tailgate opens to a surprisingly roomy cargo area, expandable by folding the rear seats.

Tech and luxury aren’t overlooked. You get a 10.25-inch digital cluster, a 9-inch infotainment display with Google built in, an eight-speaker Bose sound system, dual-zone climate control, heated leather-and-suede seats, and ambient lighting. Upholstery comes in deep blue-and-white or classic black.

A Hybrid That Feels Sporty

Under the hood is Honda’s e:HEV hybrid system: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. Expected output is around 200 hp (149 kW / 203 PS). To make it more engaging, Honda added the S+ shift system, simulating gear changes through torque mapping and sound effects. Chassis tweaks borrowed from the Civic Type R, like Brembo brakes, a dual-axis front suspension, and a wider track, give it sharp handling tuned for this hybrid coupe.

Pricing That Raises Eyebrows

The Prelude isn’t cheap, and that’s noticeable when you compare it to rivals. In Japan, it costs more than the Nissan Fairlady Z, which packs a 400 hp twin-turbo V6, and even edges out the Toyota GR Supra. For perspective, the Civic e:HEV starts around $27,600, while the Civic Type R Racing Black edition matches the Prelude’s $41,700 price. U.S. pricing hasn’t been announced, but it’s likely the Prelude will cross the $40,000 mark here too.

Limited First Run

Honda will start taking orders in Japan on September 5, with only 2,000 units in the first production batch. How quickly those disappear will be a good test of whether drivers are ready to pay a premium for a stylish, hybrid coupe that’s as much about fun as it is about efficiency.
