Gigantamax Rillaboom is one of the toughest Max Battle bosses in Pokémon GO. While it only has one type, Grass, its massive health pool and powerful attacks make it a serious challenge. Walking into the battle with random Pokémon is unlikely to end well. Success depends on proper preparation, strong counters, and teamwork.

Understand Gigantamax Rillaboom’s Weaknesses

As a pure Grass-type Pokémon, Gigantamax Rillaboom takes extra damage from five different types:

  • Fire
  • Flying
  • Ice
  • Poison
  • Bug

At the same time, it resists several common attack types, including:

  • Grass
  • Water
  • Electric
  • Ground

Avoid bringing Pokémon that rely mainly on those resisted attacks unless they serve another important role in your team.

Build the Right Team

Unlike normal raids, Gigantamax Battles reward players who work together. Instead of everyone using only attackers, your group should include different roles.

A balanced team usually consists of:

  • Strong Fire-type attackers
  • Durable defenders that can survive multiple attacks
  • Healers that keep teammates alive
  • Players focused on building the Max Meter quickly

This balanced approach allows the group to stay in the battle longer while dealing consistent damage during Max Phases.

Best Attackers Against Gigantamax Rillaboom

Fire-types are generally the strongest choice because they hit Rillaboom’s weakness while resisting many of its Grass-type attacks.

Some of the best attackers include:

  • Gigantamax Cinderace
  • Gigantamax Charizard
  • Dynamax Charizard
  • Moltres
  • Volcarona
  • Darmanitan
  • Blaziken

Flying attackers can also perform well, especially if they have powerful Flying-type moves.

Ice, Bug, and Poison attackers are usable, but they usually fall behind the strongest Fire-type options in overall damage.

Use Good Tanks and Support Pokémon

Many players overlook defensive Pokémon, but they are extremely valuable during Gigantamax Battles.

Some excellent choices include:

  • Corviknight
  • Blissey
  • Butterfree
  • Vespiquen

These Pokémon survive longer than pure attackers, helping your team build Max Energy while avoiding unnecessary knockouts.

A strong tank often contributes more to a successful raid than an attacker that faints quickly.

Charge the Max Meter Efficiently

One mistake many trainers make is using Charged Attacks whenever they become available.

During Gigantamax Battles, this is usually not the fastest strategy.

Instead:

  • Focus on using Fast Attacks to build Max Energy.
  • Save your strongest Max Move for the Max Phase.
  • Avoid wasting time on long Charged Attack animations unless they fit your strategy.

Building the Max Meter quickly lets your team unleash stronger attacks more often.

Watch Out for Rillaboom’s Moves

Gigantamax Rillaboom can use different moves, and some are much more dangerous than others.

Grass-type attacks are usually manageable if your team brings Fire or Flying Pokémon.

However, Ground-type moves like Earth Power can be especially threatening because they deal heavy damage to several popular Fire-type counters.

If your group notices Rillaboom using Earth Power, defensive Pokémon become even more valuable.

Coordinate With Other Trainers

Communication is one of the biggest differences between winning and losing.

Before starting the battle:

  • Decide who will attack.
  • Assign defensive players.
  • Have at least one healer if possible.
  • Make sure everyone has powered-up Pokémon.

Groups that coordinate roles usually perform much better than groups where every player uses only attackers.

Power Up Before the Battle

Even the best Pokémon will struggle if they are underleveled.

Before challenging Gigantamax Rillaboom, try to:

  • Increase Pokémon levels.
  • Upgrade Max Moves whenever possible.
  • Stock up on healing items.
  • Bring fully evolved Pokémon.

Small improvements across an entire team can make a huge difference during long battles.

How Many Players Do You Need?

Gigantamax Battles are designed for groups rather than solo players.

While highly organized teams with excellent Pokémon have managed to complete the battle with only a handful of trainers, most players should expect to battle with a much larger group.

For the highest chance of success:

  • Join local community events.
  • Coordinate with friends.
  • Participate during busy event hours.

The more prepared your teammates are, the easier the battle becomes.
