Stepping into the mythic tale “Takezo the Unrivalled” in Ghost of Yotei is exciting — and challenging. In this guide, we’ll walk through every step and strategy you need to defeat Takezo. We’ll keep the language simple and clear, and vary sentence structures so it doesn’t feel robotic. Let’s dive in.

The Takezo questline unlocks once you defeat any Disciples of Takezo at a Dueling Tree after the prologue. After that, you’ll be tasked with dueling five disciples across Ezo, and finally confronting Takezo himself. Win, and you earn the powerful Dual Katana Spirit Attack.
But beating him isn’t just about raw strength. Timing, defenses, choice of weapon, and charm load-outs all matter.
Step 1: Defeat the Five Disciples
You must locate and defeat all five disciples (each tied to a Dueling Tree). Each disciple gives you a special charm when beaten. Here’s a brief breakdown:

Tips for disciple fights:
- Watch for red-glint attacks: These must be dodged, not parried.
- Parry only when you see the timing clearly: Don’t anticipate too early.
- Dodge or sidestep spin and gap-closing attacks.
- Use Zenith tools such as blind bombs or flash bombs if things go awry.
- Heal smartly — don’t wait until full health is gone.
- Swap between weapon styles, for example using Yari + Katana mix can help you adapt to different phases.
After defeating all five, a clear path opens to the Coastal Dueling Tree. You’ll be told to “wait for Takezo” by interacting with a stump near a campfire.
Step 2: Facing Takezo (Phase 1)
Once Takezo arrives, the duel begins. In Phase 1, he uses a set of moves you must learn and respond to:
- Unblockable shoulder slices — must dodge.
- Triple over-the-shoulder stabs — you can parry or dodge, depending on timing.
- Draw attacks (hip slash from sheathed weapon) — always unblockable, so dodge.
- Kick interruptions during combos — break your rhythm, be ready to disengage.
At roughly one third of his health, a cutscene triggers. He may reset or move into the next phase. Use that moment to reset your guard, consume buffs, or heal.
Step 3: Facing Takezo (Phase 2)
Phase 2 is trickier. Takezo weapon swaps between:
- Oar (long reach, spear-like)
- Katana
Key traits and tips:
- Many Oar attacks show parry glints — these are slower, so only parry when you see a clear prompt.
- Every time he swaps weapons, he executes an unblockable draw strike. Prepare to dodge before and after swap.
- Be patient. Don’t rush combos; wait for clear openings.
- As his health drops further, you’ll unlock the Dual Slash prompt (Triangle + Circle). Use it to finish him off.
Once the Dual Slash is executed, a cutscene ends the duel and you complete “Takezo the Unrivalled.”
Pro Tips & Strategy Summary
- Equip all five charms from the disciples — they boost your stats and often give perks that matter in the final fight.
- Stay calm and read his cues, not his posture. Don’t guess prematurely.
- Use dodging more than parries — especially when in doubt.
- Keep healing items ready rather than waiting too long.
- Make use of spirit or special attacks if he gives room.
- Study his weapon swap pattern and anticipate the unblockable draw strike each time.
After the Duel: The Five Teachings
After defeating Takezo, you eventually unlock another quest, The Five Teachings. To face him again at the summit of Mount Yotei, you must:
- Equip all five charms from his disciples.
- Travel to the top of Mt. Yotei via shrine path or fast travel.
- Duel Takezo once more. He now has a freezing mechanic that slowly reduces your max health over time.
Even though you lose health, you cannot be fully killed by the freeze effect — and defeating him finishes the questline.
