Pokémon GO is constantly evolving, and now, with the introduction of the Dynamax feature and Max Battles, players can experience a new level of gameplay. This exciting addition was first seen in Pokémon Sword & Shield, where Pokémon can grow to massive sizes to unleash powerful moves. If you’re eager to learn how to Dynamax in Pokémon GO, you’re in the right place. Here’s everything you need to know to get started with Dynamax and Max Battles in this mobile game.

Dynamax is a mechanic that allows certain Pokémon to grow into gigantic forms during battle. This feature is similar to the Mega Evolution we’ve seen before, but with some key differences. In Pokémon GO, Dynamaxing a Pokémon can significantly increase its power and let it perform unique, powerful moves called Max Moves.

When a Pokémon Dynamaxes, it remains in its enlarged state for three turns. However, you can only Dynamax one Pokémon per battle, so it’s essential to choose wisely. Max Moves vary depending on the Pokémon’s typing and play a crucial role in Max Battles, where players face off against Dynamax Pokémon.

How to Prepare for Dynamax Max Battles

Max Battles in Pokémon GO function similarly to Raid Battles, but with some notable changes. Here’s how you can prepare:

  1. Find a Power Spot: Dynamax battles take place at locations called Power Spots, which will appear across the map. These locations change periodically, so be on the lookout for them as you explore.

  2. Collect Max Particles: Before you can join a Max Battle, you’ll need Max Particles. These act like Raid Passes and are required for entry. The cost in Max Particles can vary depending on the strength of the Dynamax Pokémon you’re battling. Typically, you’ll need at least 250 Max Particles to participate.

  3. Team Up with Other Players: You won’t face these powerful Pokémon alone. Just like Raids, up to four players can team up to tackle a Dynamax Pokémon. You can invite friends or wait for other trainers to join at the Power Spot.

  4. Bring a Dynamax Pokémon: Only Pokémon capable of Dynamaxing can participate in Max Battles. You can start your collection with a Dynamax Wooloo, which is available through the “To the Max!” Special Research. Having a strong team that includes a Dynamax-capable Pokémon is crucial to your success.

How to Dynamax in a Battle

Once you’ve entered a Max Battle, the gameplay is quite different from traditional battles:

  1. Fill the Max Meter: During the battle, you’ll notice a meter filling up as you attack the opposing Pokémon. This meter, called the Max Meter, determines when your Pokémon is ready to Dynamax. Once it’s full, your Pokémon will transform into its massive form for three turns.

  2. Max Moves: When your Pokémon is in its Dynamax form, you can choose from a set of powerful Max Moves. These are limited but can significantly impact the battle. Here are a few common Max Moves:

    • Max Guard: A defensive move that reduces damage.
    • Max Geyser: A powerful attack that deals damage based on the Pokémon’s type.
    • Max Spirit: A status move that restores HP for both you and your teammates.
  3. Dodging and Collecting Energy: Just like Raid Battles, you’ll need to tap the screen to attack and swipe to dodge incoming attacks. You’ll also notice energy icons on the battlefield—collecting these will help you fill your Max Meter more quickly.

  4. Strategic Team Play: Max Battles are turn-based, so careful planning with your teammates is essential. Communicate with your fellow trainers to time your Max Moves and maximize damage.

Rules and Restrictions for Max Battles

Max Battles come with a few rules and restrictions you should be aware of:

  • No Remote Participation: Unlike Raids, you cannot join Max Battles from a remote location. You must be physically near the Power Spot to participate.
  • Local Team Play: You can team up with up to four trainers. Since this is a turn-based battle, working together is critical.
  • Fainting Means Elimination: If all of your Pokémon faint during a Max Battle, you cannot re-enter. However, you can still cheer for your teammates to help boost their performance.

Winning a Max Battle

Winning a Max Battle is all about teamwork, strategy, and timing. Once you defeat the Dynamax Pokémon, you’ll have the opportunity to catch it using Premier Balls, just like in Raids. Dynamax Pokémon have a distinctive glowing pink aura and come with special Max Moves, making them valuable additions to your team.

Rewards for Max Battles

After a successful battle, you’ll earn various rewards. You can also place one of your Pokémon at the Power Spot where the battle took place. This Pokémon will assist other trainers in future battles, and you’ll earn extra rewards such as Rare Candy, Berries, and other useful items. The more trainers that place their Pokémon at a Power Spot, the bigger the attack bonus for future battles.
