It is absolutely okay if you somehow missed the deadline to file for an extension. Here is how you can still save the day and file for a tax report extension now. So, let’s get started and find the right ways to fix this.

What does it mean to file a tax report extension?

Filing a tax extension basically tells the IRS that you need more time to get your paperwork aligned or do some legal behind-the-curtain work that is your own before you present the numbers to the authorities. It pushes your filing deadline back six months, usually to October 15th, which gives you some more time to fix it all. The most important thing to remember is that it only extends the deadline for the forms, not for the money you might owe to the government, and you will still be required to pay it up on time. If you owe taxes, those were still technically due in April, so the IRS will likely charge interest on any unpaid balance until you are able to pay it back.

Steps to file an extension at the IRS

If you want to file an extension at the IRS after having missed the deadline, here is how you can handle it.

Make a payment via IRS Direct Pay

This is the fastest way, and you don’t have to fill out a form either. To do this, simply go to the IRS website, select Make a Payment, and choose Extension as your reason for payment. Even a small payment triggers an automatic extension in their system, and you will get a confirmation number instantly. And it is fixed!

Submit E-Form 4868

Even though you may be late, you can still use IRS Free File or commercial software like TurboTax or FreeTaxUSA. These platforms have a special section for extensions where you can give your basic info, social security number, and an estimate of your total tax liability for 2025.

Mail a paper Form 4868

Beyond the emailing, you can also go with an email. For this, just visit the IRS website and get it to a post office immediately. Since it is technically a day late now, using Certified Mail is a good idea.

The Payment

Since the payment deadline was yesterday, any balance you owe is now accruing interest. This is something to stay aware of. Even if you file the extension, you can now try to pay as much as possible right away to avoid the interest piling up.

Do not stress, even though the deadline has passed. There is still a way to take care of it.
