About a 401 (k) account

A 401(k) is an employer-sponsored retirement savings plan that is considered important if you are living in the U.S. With it, you decide to have a portion of your paycheck automatically deducted and invested for future needs. The main draw is the tax advantage: your contributions often come out pre-tax, lowering your current taxable income. That’s not just the only perk! Even many employers offer a match, too! Your money grows without a tax until you take it out in retirement. It’s one of the best ways to build a comfortable financial future, which is even better with a total match.

Is a 401 (k) account the same as a Roth 401 (k) account?

No, they are not the same and carry their own differences. The main difference comes down to when you pay the taxes. Let us explain! With a traditional 401(k) account, you get a tax break now because contributions are pre-tax, but you pay income tax on withdrawals in retirement. However, the Roth 401(k) is the opposite. Here, you contribute money that has already been taxed, but your own withdrawals in retirement, including all the investment growth, are completely tax-free. So, you can also say in a way they’re the same, but opposite to each other.

Steps to find an old 401 (k) account

If you want to find an old 401 (k) account, follow the steps given below!

Contact Your Former Employer

This should be your first step and is important. Reach out to the Human Resources or Benefits department, as they can confirm if a balance remains and provide the contact information for the current plan administrator.

Check Your Old Documents

The next thing you can do is to look for past W-2s, quarterly statements, or any mail from the company’s financial provider, as this will have the plan administrator’s name.

Reach out to the DOL

The Department of Labor’s Retirement Savings Lost and Found Database is another place that is a known resource for helping people locate plans associated with their Social Security number. You can reach out to them, too.

Search Government Databases

The final thing is to use resources like the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits or your state’s Unclaimed Property website. Your money may have been transferred there if the company was unable to locate you. It may take some time to process, but it happens.

These are the ways that you can follow to locate your 401 (k) account and take care of it.
