Since the launch of Chapter 7, Fortnite introduced a game-changing feature: the ability to self-revive. This means that if you get knocked down, you don’t always need a teammate to get you back into the fight. Instead, you can carry a special item — the Self‑Revive Device — and activate it yourself. In this article, you’ll learn exactly when, where, and how to use this feature to give yourself a second chance on the battlefield.

The Self-Revive Device is a legendary utility item added in Chapter 7’s “Pacific Break” update. When you carry it and get knocked down (entering “Down But Not Out” or DBNO), a prompt appears: “Self-Revive Device Ready.” If you quickly press your confirm/fire button, the device triggers a 10-second revival timer. At the end of that timer, you stand back up — but with only 30 HP (and no shield). The device is consumed on use, so each self-revive requires having another device in your inventory.
How to get a Self-Revive Device
There are several ways to obtain the device, though some are more reliable than others:
- Buy from a Mending Machine — This is the most dependable. Each Self-Revive Device costs 2,500 gold bars at a Mending Machine. If you’ve gathered enough gold early on, purchasing one ensures you have a revive ready.
- Supply Drops — Occasionally, Supply Drops contain the Self-Revive Device. This method is more unpredictable, and you’ll often face competition when trying to loot it.
- Rare Chests — Some rare (special) chests can drop the device, though the chance is low — so it’s more opportunistic than strategic.
- Late-game care packages from Rift anomalies — In matches with Rift anomalies, care packages may spawn containing the device. This tends to be situational, but sometimes pays off.
Because the device is single-use, many players try to carry more than one — especially toward the mid-to-late game, when fights intensify.
When and How to Activate Self-Revive
Once you have the device in your inventory, you don’t need to equip it: it sits passively until you are knocked down. Here’s how to use it effectively:
- Get knocked (DBNO) — If you lose all your HP but aren’t eliminated, you enter DBNO.
- See the prompt — A “Self-Revive Device Ready” message appears on screen.
- Press fire/confirm button quickly — This begins the 10-second revival countdown.
- Stay safe while reviving — You are vulnerable during this timer. If enemies shoot you, the revival fails and you get eliminated.
- Revive with 30 HP and no shield — Once revived, apply heals or shield immediately. Without recovery items, you’re extremely fragile.
Because of the risk involved during the countdown, it’s often best to activate the device only when you have real cover — behind walls, inside buildings, or natural terrain. Avoid trying in the open.
Strategic Tips for Smart Use
Holding a Self-Revive Device doesn’t guarantee success. It’s a tactical tool — and being smart about when and how to use it makes all the difference. Here are some best practices:
- Carry healing/shield items too: After revival, you have low HP — so extra medkits or shield potions are essential.
- Use cover before triggering: Try to crawl or roll behind obstacles before starting the countdown. Chapter 7 introduced improved mobility while downed — you can roll, sprint slowly, or sometimes reach a safer spot before activating.
- Communicate with teammates: If playing in squad or duo mode, let your teammates know you plan to self-revive — they can cover you.
- Don’t rely solely on it: The Self-Revive Device is powerful, but limited. Use it as a safety net, not a crutch for reckless fights.
- Budget wisely: Buying the device costs gold bars, which you could also spend on weapons, shields, or other items — balance carefully depending on how the match is going.
