Screen tearing is one of the most common display problems that gamers and PC users experience. It happens when your monitor shows parts of multiple frames on the screen at the same time, creating a visible horizontal split or broken image. This issue becomes especially noticeable during fast camera movement in games, while watching videos, or even when scrolling through web pages.

The good news is that screen tearing is usually easy to fix. In most cases, it is caused by your graphics card and monitor falling out of sync rather than a hardware failure. By changing a few settings or updating your software, you can enjoy much smoother visuals.
What Causes Screen Tearing?
Your graphics card creates frames as quickly as it can, while your monitor refreshes at a fixed speed, such as 60Hz, 120Hz, or 144Hz. When the graphics card sends a new frame before the monitor finishes displaying the current one, the monitor combines parts of two different frames. This creates the tearing effect.
Several factors can contribute to this problem, including:
- High frame rates that exceed your monitor’s refresh rate
- Disabled vertical synchronization
- Outdated graphics drivers
- Incorrect display settings
- Incompatible graphics settings in games
- Hardware limitations
Finding the exact cause makes solving the issue much easier.
Enable Vertical Sync (V-Sync)
The simplest fix is enabling Vertical Synchronization, commonly called V-Sync.
V-Sync tells your graphics card to wait until your monitor finishes refreshing before sending another frame. This keeps both devices synchronized and removes screen tearing in many situations.
Most games include a V-Sync option in their graphics settings. You can also force V-Sync through your graphics driver’s control panel.
Keep in mind that V-Sync may introduce slight input lag, especially in competitive multiplayer games where quick reactions matter.
Use Adaptive Sync Technologies
Modern monitors often support adaptive synchronization technologies that provide a much better solution than traditional V-Sync.
Popular technologies include:
- NVIDIA G-SYNC
- AMD FreeSync
- HDMI Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
These technologies allow the monitor’s refresh rate to change dynamically to match the graphics card’s frame output. The result is smooth gameplay with minimal tearing and much lower input lag.
If both your graphics card and monitor support one of these features, enable it for the best experience.
Limit Your Frame Rate
Sometimes your graphics card produces hundreds of frames every second, even though your monitor cannot display that many.
Limiting your frame rate can reduce or completely eliminate screen tearing.
You can limit FPS by:
- Using the game’s built-in frame limiter
- Setting an FPS cap in your graphics driver
- Using trusted performance monitoring software
For example, if your monitor runs at 144Hz, limiting the game to around 141 or 142 FPS often delivers smoother performance.
Update Your Graphics Drivers
Graphics driver updates frequently include bug fixes, display improvements, and better compatibility with newer games.
If you are using outdated drivers, screen tearing may occur more often.
Always install the latest stable drivers for your graphics card. After updating, restart your computer so the changes take effect properly.
Check Your Monitor Refresh Rate
Sometimes Windows is set to a lower refresh rate than your monitor supports.
For example, a 144Hz monitor may accidentally be running at only 60Hz.
To verify your refresh rate:
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Display settings.
- Select Advanced Display.
- Choose the highest supported refresh rate for your monitor.
Using the correct refresh rate provides smoother motion and reduces the chance of tearing.
Lower Graphics Settings if Necessary
If your graphics card struggles to maintain stable performance, inconsistent frame delivery may increase visual issues.
Try lowering demanding graphics options such as:
- Shadow quality
- Ray tracing
- Anti-aliasing
- Texture quality
- View distance
A more stable frame rate often results in smoother gameplay overall.
Use Fullscreen Mode
Some games perform differently depending on the display mode you choose.
If you experience tearing while using Borderless Windowed mode, switch to Exclusive Fullscreen mode instead.
Exclusive Fullscreen gives the game more direct control over your display and often works better with V-Sync, G-SYNC, and FreeSync.
If Fullscreen causes other problems, you can experiment with Borderless mode to see which performs better on your system.
Inspect Your Display Cable
A damaged or outdated display cable is less likely to cause screen tearing directly, but it can create other display problems that resemble tearing.
Make sure:
- The cable is firmly connected.
- The cable supports your monitor’s maximum refresh rate.
- You use high-quality DisplayPort or HDMI cables when appropriate.
Replacing an old cable is a simple troubleshooting step if other fixes do not work.
Restart After Making Changes
Many users change multiple settings without restarting their computer or game.
After updating drivers or modifying display settings, restart both Windows and the affected game. This ensures every change is properly applied before testing the results.
