If your contact list is cluttered up, here is how you can fix it! Follow the guide to learn how to remove duplicate contacts yourself and save some space on your device. So, let’s get started.
What are duplicate contacts in a contact list?
Duplicate contacts are contact doppelgangers in your phone book. They happen when the same person ends up with multiple separate entries instead of one clean card, often creating a situation of confusion. Usually, this occurs because you saved someone’s email one day and their phone number another. While this is a prime reason, that’s not it. Perhaps you synced your phone with both Google and Outlook at the same time, and that’s why it happened. Sometimes, importing an old SIM card also creates these twin numbers. It’s annoying because you cannot be sure which number you must reach out to when you have to contact them. However, it is not a situation so tricky that you can’t take care of it.
Steps to remove duplicate contacts
If you want to remove duplicate contacts on your phone, then these are the steps that you can follow.
- If you use an iPhone, you must know that the process is now built directly into the system. Open your contacts app and look right under your personal business card at the top of the screen. If the phone detects double entries, it will show a notification that says duplicates found. This is your sigh. Just tap on that, and you can either review them one by one or click on merge all to let the phone combine the data for you, and you don’t have to manually do it.
- If you are an Android user, the Google Contacts app can be your savior. Just start by opening the app and head to the fix and manage tab at the bottom. You will see an option that says merge and fix. Tapping merge duplicates will show you a list of people who share the same numbers or emails. An entire list will get sorted out for you the second you choose to do it!
- This is another way you can go! You can also open the Google Contacts website on your computer. On the left sidebar, there is a merge and fix button that is going to work exactly like the mobile version but gives everything on a bigger screen for you to view and manage.
Once you’ve done it, it’s taken care of. However, always remember to check your sync settings afterward so the duplicates do not just come back the next time your accounts refresh.
