Water is life on Arrakis, and in Dune Awakening, that’s more than just a saying—it’s a survival rule. Every drop counts when you’re battling sandstorms, crafting gear, or just trying to stay alive under the twin suns. If you’ve reached the mid-game, you’ve probably realized that basic water-gathering methods won’t cut it anymore. That’s where the Fremen Deathstill comes in. This macabre but incredibly efficient device lets you extract water from corpses, turning fallen enemies into a lifeline. Here’s everything you need to know about unlocking and crafting one.

Before we dive into the how, let’s talk about the why. Early-game water sources—like sucking dew from plants or purifying blood—are slow and labor-intensive. The Deathstill changes that. A single corpse processed in this machine yields a whopping 25,000ml of water in just one hour. Compare that to Windtraps, which generate a measly 2,700ml in the same time, and it’s easy to see why this is the go-to method for serious players.
But there’s a catch. The Deathstill isn’t something you can just stumble upon. You’ll need to prove yourself first.
Step 1: Completing the Trials of Aql
The Fremen don’t hand out their secrets to just anyone. To unlock the Deathstill, you’ll need to complete all eight Trials of Aql, a series of challenges that test your survival skills, combat prowess, and understanding of Arrakis.
Here’s a quick rundown of what you’re up against:
- First Trial (Mihna Cavern): Stealth is key—evade sentries to reach the end.
- Second Trial (Eastern Vermillius Gap): Use a Spice Compactor to clear obstacles.
- Third Trial (Cave of the Lost Pilgrim): Listen to a recording to uncover Fremen lore.
- Fourth Trial (The Hollow Hammer): A combat-focused test that unlocks the Prescient state.
- Fifth Trial (Hagga Rift): Parkour and sandworm evasion—bring a Thumper.
- Sixth Trial (Devil’s Eye Cavern): Navigate a treacherous cave system.
- Seventh Trial (The Red Maw): Survive sandstorms using stilltents.
- Eighth Trial (Sietch Tal’ab): The final challenge, deep in Fremen territory.
Completing the last trial, Footsteps of the Fremen, is what finally grants you access to the Deathstill schematic. If you’ve already reached the Duraluminium tier, you’ll unlock both the basic and advanced versions at once.
Step 2: Gathering the Right Materials
Once you’ve earned the schematic, it’s time to gather materials. The Deathstill isn’t cheap to build, so prepare for some grinding.
Basic Fremen Deathstill Requirements
- 60 Steel Ingots
- 28 Silicone Blocks
- 32 Complex Machinery
Advanced Fremen Deathstill Requirements
- 240 Duraluminium Ingots
- 170 Silicone Blocks
- 70 Complex Machinery
If you’re at the Duraluminium stage, skip the basic version—the advanced one produces nearly double the water in less time. But if you’re still working your way up, the basic Deathstill will keep you hydrated while you gather better resources.
Step 3: Crafting the Deathstill
With materials in hand, open your Construction Tool and navigate to the Water Discipline research tab. Select the Deathstill schematic, place it near your Sub-Fief Console, and confirm the build.
One important note: the Deathstill requires power (200 units) to function. Make sure your base has a steady supply from a generator before you start processing corpses.
How to Use the Fremen Deathstill
Now for the grim part. The Deathstill doesn’t work without fuel—and in this case, fuel means bodies.
- Collect Corpses: After killing an enemy, hold the interaction key (default F) to store the body in your inventory. Be warned—corpses are heavy (75 units each), so use your vehicle’s storage if possible.
- Deposit into the Deathstill: Carry a corpse to your base, place it in the machine, and let it work. You’ll see a visual animation of water being extracted.
- Collect Your Water: After an hour, the Deathstill deposits 25,000ml directly into your water storage. No need to babysit it—just come back when it’s done.
