If a game on Steam suddenly starts crashing, freezes during loading, refuses to launch, or displays missing file errors, damaged game files are often the cause. Fortunately, Steam includes a built-in feature that scans your installed game files and replaces any missing or corrupted data automatically. This process is called verifying the integrity of game files, and it is one of the easiest ways to fix many common PC gaming problems without downloading the entire game again.

Whether you are dealing with random crashes after an update or strange in-game bugs, learning how to verify game files on Steam can save time and prevent unnecessary reinstallations. Here is everything you need to know.

What Does Verifying Game Files Do?

Every Steam game contains thousands of files that allow it to run correctly. Sometimes these files become corrupted due to interrupted downloads, failed updates, storage issues, unexpected system shutdowns, or third-party modifications.

When you verify game files, Steam compares every installed file on your computer with the official version stored on Steam’s servers. If it detects files that are missing, damaged, or different from the original version, Steam automatically downloads fresh copies.

The verification process can fix problems such as:

  • Games failing to launch
  • Random crashes or freezing
  • Missing textures or audio
  • Infinite loading screens
  • Error messages after updates
  • Files damaged by power outages or storage problems

It does not normally affect your saved games because save files are usually stored separately from the game’s installation folder.

How To Verify Game Files On Steam

Follow these simple steps to verify your game files.

  1. Launch the Steam client.
  2. Click the Library tab.
  3. Find the game you want to repair.
  4. Right-click the game’s name.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Installed Files section.
  7. Click Verify Integrity of Game Files.
  8. Wait while Steam scans the installation.

The verification process may take anywhere from a few seconds to over an hour depending on the game’s size and your storage drive’s speed.

If Steam finds damaged or missing files, it will automatically download the replacements before finishing.

What Happens After Verification?

Once verification is complete, Steam will display a confirmation message.

There are two common outcomes:

  • All files successfully validated, meaning your installation matches the official version.
  • Steam reacquired one or more files, indicating corrupted or missing data was found and repaired.

If your game still experiences issues afterward, the problem may be related to drivers, hardware, software conflicts, or game settings rather than damaged installation files.

Will Verification Delete Mods?

Possibly. It depends on how the game handles modifications.

If you manually replaced original game files with modded versions, Steam may restore the official files during verification, causing those mods to stop working.

However, many games support mods through separate folders or Steam Workshop. These mods usually remain untouched because they are managed independently.

If you rely on manually installed modifications, consider backing them up before running the verification process.

Does Verification Delete Save Files?

No. Verifying game files does not normally remove your saved progress.

Most Steam games store save data inside folders such as:

  • Documents
  • AppData
  • User profile folders
  • Steam Cloud

Because these locations are separate from the game’s installation directory, your progress usually remains safe.

Even so, enabling Steam Cloud whenever available provides extra protection against accidental data loss.

When Should You Verify Game Files?

Verifying files is a good troubleshooting step whenever you notice unusual behavior.

Common situations include:

  • A game crashes after a recent update.
  • The game refuses to launch.
  • Missing textures or invisible objects appear.
  • Audio files fail to play.
  • Performance suddenly becomes unstable.
  • Error messages mention missing files.
  • Downloads were interrupted before completion.

Running verification before reinstalling a game can often solve these problems much faster.
