A humanoid robot’s first painting sells for $1M, marking a significant milestone in the intersection of AI and art. A portrait of Alan Turing painted by an AI-powered humanoid robot has set a new record, selling for $1.08 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. The artwork, titled “AI God: Portrait of Alan Turing,” was created by Ai-Da, a humanoid robot artist developed by British gallerist Aidan Meller. The final sale far exceeded the pre-auction estimates of $120,000-$180,000, attracting 27 bids before closing.

Alan Turing, a celebrated mathematician and codebreaker, played a crucial role in developing early computers and decrypting German codes during World War II. His groundbreaking work laid the foundations of modern computing. However, Turing’s life was cut short when he tragically ended his life in 1954 after being convicted under discriminatory laws of the time.

Ai-Da’s painting pays tribute to Turing’s enduring legacy in computing and artificial intelligence. Meller emphasized the significance of Ai-Da’s artwork as a reflection of how AI is reshaping the world. The humanoid robot aims to stimulate conversations about the ethical implications of advanced technology.

Creation Process and Technology Behind Ai-Da

Ai-Da, an ultra-realistic robot, gained global attention when the humanoid robot’s first painting sold for $1M at Sotheby’s. Ai-Da was launched in 2019 in collaboration with engineers from Engineered Arts and researchers from the University of Oxford. The robot uses artificial intelligence, including large language models, to communicate, generate ideas, and create art. Ai-Da’s artistic process involved analyzing images of Turing and producing multiple sketches with robotic precision. Each sketch took up to eight hours to complete, resulting in 15 variations that were later assembled into the final artwork.

To create the portrait, Ai-Da used its built-in cameras to capture images of Turing. It then painted various interpretations of Turing’s face on small canvases. These individual pieces were combined and scaled up using 3D printing technology, ensuring fidelity to the robot’s original work.

A New Milestone for AI Art

The sale marks a shift in how AI-generated art is perceived in the market. According to Sotheby’s, this record-breaking sale is a testament to the intersection of technology and art. Meller likened the impact of AI art to the invention of photography, suggesting that the influence of AI on art could be even more transformative.

While some art critics have been skeptical, dismissing such works as mere novelties, others see Ai-Da’s creations as an important commentary on the rapid advancement of technology. Ai-Da’s achievement, where the humanoid robot’s first painting sells for $1M, has sparked debates on whether AI can truly create art.

The robot’s ability to independently choose subjects, styles, and techniques demonstrates the evolving capabilities of AI in creative fields.

The Future of AI

In a statement, Ai-Da explained that the portrait of Turing was intended to spark reflection on the increasingly powerful role of AI in society. Turing himself had expressed concerns about the implications of artificial intelligence decades ago. The painting’s muted tones and fragmented facial planes are seen as a symbolic representation of the challenges AI presents.

Meller believes that Ai-Da, as an artistic entity, challenges the boundaries of what it means to be human and serves as a mirror to society’s technological trajectory. The robot has been showcased at various prestigious events, including the United Nations Global Summit on AI for Good, 10 Downing Street, and the House of Lords, emphasizing its role in global dialogues about AI’s future impact.

Since its inception, Ai-Da has gained recognition for its thought-provoking artworks and public speeches. The robot has participated in high-profile exhibitions and discussions, underlining its unique position in exploring the convergence of art, technology, and ethics.
