A final-year computer science engineering student at IIT Hyderabad has shattered placement records with a Rs 2.5 crore annual package from Netherlands-based trading firm Optiver, the highest ever at the institute since its 2008 founding. Edward Nathan Varghese, 21, converted a summer internship into a pre-placement offer for the software engineer role at Optiver’s Amsterdam office, starting full-time in July. The internship featured two weeks of training followed by a six-week project that impressed recruiters enough to lock in the deal early. Varghese cracked JEE Main with AIR 1100, showcasing top-tier talent from day one. Another CSE student grabbed Rs 1.1 crore this season, pushing the bar higher after previous peaks topped out at Rs 1 crore in 2017, Rs 90 lakh in 2023-24 and Rs 66 lakh last year.

Varghese credited competitive programming skills honed since first year, where he ranked among India’s top 100, plus the institute’s flexible curriculum that let him balance academics and projects. He shrugged off job market jitters, betting the IIT brand would draw firms despite slowdowns. Faculty-in-charge Mayur Vaidya called it proof of IITH’s pull, with Phase 1 wrapping December amid 24 international offers. The surge defies broader campus hiring dips, where registrations fell but quality rose.

Placement Surge Amid Tough Market:

IIT Hyderabad’s 2025 placements kicked off strong, with average CTC jumping 75 per cent to Rs 36.2 lakh from Rs 20.8 lakh last year. Phase 1 saw 62 per cent of undergrads placed, seven CSE offers over Rs 1 crore including Varghese’s outlier. Postgraduate numbers hit 196 out of 650 at Rs 22 lakh average, with Phase 2 eyeing more domestic slots from PSUs and core firms. Vaidya highlighted early access for non-tech roles and outreach stressing curriculum diversity. Total offers topped 710, with internationals at 24 despite global caution. Intern stipends peaked at Rs 19 lakh, averaging Rs 80,000. The record eclipses older highs, reflecting CSE’s dominance in quant trading and tech where firms like Optiver hunt coding whizzes. Varghese’s path – JEE success to internship conversion – maps a blueprint for peers chasing global gigs.

Optiver’s Global Trading Appeal:

Optiver, a market maker trading derivatives and equities across Amsterdam, Chicago and Sydney, drew Varghese after his summer stint. The firm values low-latency coders for high-frequency setups, offering fat pay to snag IIT brains. Amsterdam’s hub pulls talent with Europe’s tech scene and work-life perks, though visa and relocation add hurdles. Varghese’s package crushes domestic norms, highlighting offshore pull amid rupee salaries capping at Rs 1-2 crore even at peaks.

IITH’s Placement Edge Shines

Founded in 2008 on 576 acres close to Hyderabad, IIT Hyderabad combines industry connections with research. Varghese’s results are fueled by flexible programs that allow students to customize their courses. While tech giants heavily target CSE, the placement office promotes PSUs for core branches. IITH defies trends with rising averages and records despite 2025’s slowdown and Telangana’s declining registrations. Vaidya prioritizes quality above quantity and focuses on full batch placement. Building on the success of Phase 1, Phase 2 targets the remaining PGs with local offerings. The Rs 2.5 crore accomplishment highlights how hard work, internships, competitive coding, and IIT rigor can pay off nicely. In the face of unpredictable markets, Varghese’s narrative encourages colleagues who strive for similar highs.
