Indians Face Year-Long Waits for US Visas Amid Mounting Backlogs

In 2025, getting a US visa has become extremely difficult for Indian tourists, since major consulates now have appointment wait times of more than a year. Travel plans for thousands of Indians looking to visit the United States for business, tourism, family gatherings, and education have been disrupted by the enormous backlog caused by the spike in demand, new restrictions, and procedural changes.

Appointment Delays Stretch Beyond One Year:

Across India’s largest cities—Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru—applicants are facing wait times that range from 7.5 months to over 13 months, with Chennai currently reporting the longest delays. These extended timelines are not limited to tourist and business (B1/B2) visas; even those seeking to renew expired visas or apply for the first time are caught in the bottleneck. The backlog has reached such a critical point that some appointment slots are now being pushed into late 2026, making it nearly impossible for travelers to plan ahead with any certainty.

The delays have had a particularly severe impact on individuals with urgent travel needs. Many have missed important family functions, weddings, and business meetings due to the inability to secure timely appointments. Even in cases of emergencies, the unpredictability of the appointment system and the scarcity of priority slots have left applicants frustrated and helpless.

Stricter Policies and Rescheduling Rules Add to the Burden:

In response to the growing backlog, US consular authorities have introduced stricter rescheduling policies in 2025. Applicants are now allowed only one free reschedule; any further changes require the payment of a new visa fee. Missing a scheduled interview without prior cancellation results in a 120-day ban from booking a new appointment, making it imperative for applicants to be meticulous with their scheduling.

These new rules, intended to optimize appointment availability and reduce no-shows, have inadvertently added another layer of complexity for Indian travelers. The crackdown on fraudulent practices by some travel agencies has also led to increased scrutiny and more detailed interviews, resulting in higher rejection rates even for applicants with complete documentation.

Workarounds and the High Cost of Urgency:

The severity of the backlog has forced many Indian applicants, especially business travelers and those with pressing commitments, to seek alternative solutions. Some are flying to neighboring countries like Singapore and Thailand, where US visa appointment slots are more readily available. However, this option is viable only for those who can afford the additional travel and logistical costs, making it inaccessible for the majority of applicants.

Meanwhile, the unpredictability of the appointment system means that applicants are left checking portals repeatedly, hoping for cancellations or new slots to open up. For many, the process has become a test of patience and perseverance. Travel agencies report a steady stream of clients seeking advice on how to navigate the delays, but with no clear intervention from authorities, options remain limited.

Economic and Emotional Toll:

Long wait periods are causing real financial and psychological problems in addition to being a logistical hassle. The continuous delays are impacting everything from academic planning to business agreements and family reunions, yet the US continues to be a popular destination for Indian professionals, families, and students. According to industry experts, the backlog could cost the US billions in lost travel revenue as irate passengers put off or cancel their reservations.

Despite assurances from the US Department of State that additional resources will be allocated to address the backlog, no concrete timeline for improvement has been provided. The post-pandemic surge in travel demand has simply outpaced the capacity of US consulates in India, and without a significant scaling up of staff and appointment slots, the situation is unlikely to improve in the near future.

For now, Indian travelers are advised to apply as early as possible, monitor wait times regularly, and be fully prepared with all necessary documentation. As the visa crisis continues, patience and flexibility have become essential traits for anyone hoping to visit the United States from India in 2025.
