iPhone Fold Could Be Closer Than Ever as Hidden iOS 27 Code Reveals Major Clues

For years, Apple fans have speculated about the arrival of a foldable iPhone. While competitors such as Samsung, Huawei, and Google have already established themselves in the foldable smartphone market, Apple has remained noticeably absent. However, new discoveries inside the first developer beta of iOS 27 are reigniting excitement, with many believing that Apple may finally be preparing to launch its long-rumoured foldable device.

Although Apple made no mention of a foldable iPhone during its WWDC 2026 keynote, hidden references buried within the software have become one of the biggest talking points among developers and industry watchers.

Hidden iOS 27 Code Hints at a Foldable Device

The latest speculation stems from findings reportedly uncovered by software researcher M1Astra, who identified several intriguing code references inside the iOS 27 developer beta.

Among the discovered terms are “foldState,” “mechanicalAngleDegrees,” and “angleDegrees.” These labels appear to describe a device capable of tracking how far it is opened or closed around a hinge. Such functionality is commonly associated with foldable smartphones, where the software must continuously adjust based on the device’s physical position.

While these references do not explicitly mention an iPhone Fold, they strongly suggest that Apple is testing software designed for a device with a flexible display and hinge mechanism.

More Clues Found in Apple’s Repair Tools

The evidence does not stop there.

Developers also discovered references within Apple’s repair and diagnostic tools that point towards hardware unlike any current iPhone. The software reportedly mentions a secondary display, an additional glass cover, and two separate light sensors.

Individually, these components may not seem unusual. However, when viewed together, they closely resemble the architecture of modern foldable smartphones. Many foldable devices feature an external display for quick interactions when folded and a larger internal screen that becomes accessible when unfolded.

The presence of these hardware-related references has added further weight to the theory that Apple is actively preparing support for a foldable iPhone behind the scenes.

WWDC 2026 Features May Already Be Preparing for Bigger Screens

Interestingly, some of the features officially announced at WWDC 2026 also appear well suited for a foldable device.

One of the headline additions in iOS 27 is the ability to expand widgets into full-screen experiences. Apps such as Music, Weather, and News can now display significantly more information when expanded.

While useful on traditional iPhones, the feature becomes even more compelling on a larger foldable display. A foldable iPhone could offer enough screen space to transform widgets into productivity tools, media hubs, or information dashboards.

As a result, many observers believe Apple may already be laying the software foundation for a new category of devices.

macOS 27 Adds Another Piece to the Puzzle

Additional clues have emerged from macOS 27.

Apple announced improvements to its iPhone Mirroring feature, allowing mirrored iPhone windows to be resized into wider formats that resemble tablet-sized displays. This enhancement could prove particularly useful if future iPhones are capable of unfolding into larger screens.

Furthermore, Apple introduced a new App Adaptability framework that enables developers to optimize applications for varying screen sizes and aspect ratios. Although Apple presented the feature as a general development tool, it aligns perfectly with the requirements of foldable devices.

Supporting multiple display configurations is essential for ensuring a seamless foldable user experience, making the timing of the announcement particularly noteworthy.

Is the iPhone Fold Finally Coming?

Despite the growing evidence, Apple remains silent about any foldable hardware plans.

That said, the combination of hidden software references, hardware-related code strings, developer tools, and new adaptability features has created a compelling narrative. Industry rumours already suggest that Apple could unveil its first foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 series, and the discoveries inside iOS 27 have only intensified those expectations.

Whether it launches this year or later, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Apple’s software ecosystem appears to be evolving in ways that would perfectly support a foldable future. For now, fans will have to wait for an official announcement, but the clues hidden inside iOS 27 suggest that Apple’s foldable ambitions may no longer be just a rumour.
