Is Apple Ready to Lead the Foldable Race with the iPhone Fold in 2026?
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

Apple’s move into the foldable phone space has been one of the most discussed topics in the tech world for several years. Rumours, patent filings, supplier leaks, and analyst notes have kept the idea alive, but the company has kept an unusually tight lid on the project.

As 2026 approaches, reports from industry trackers and supply chain sources indicate that Apple is now preparing for its first foldable smartphone, widely referred to as the iPhone Fold. The arrival of this device is expected to change the pace of the foldable segment, partly due to Apple’s long absence from the category and partly due to the premium nature of its upcoming product. The expectations around design, pricing, and production have now formed a clearer picture, and anticipation of the launch has grown stronger over the last few months.

The foldable phone market has been dominated by Samsung, Huawei, and a few other Android brands for years. Yet none of these companies have managed to bring foldables fully into the mainstream. Early models struggled with durability worries, visible creases, bulk, and high prices. Even the most refined versions still face questions from users who hesitate to adopt a new style of phone at a premium cost.

Apple’s arrival, therefore, carries weight not just for sales figures but for broader acceptance of the foldable category. Analysts suggest that if Apple manages to launch a polished product, users who have held back from switching to foldables may finally consider doing so. This possibility is one of the main reasons the market is watching Apple’s progress with such attention.

According to reports from UDN in Taiwan and coverage from outlets like CNET, Apple has moved the project from an experimental phase into pre-mass production. This stage usually involves a smaller batch of devices built specifically for testing, refinement, and stress checks. The timeline put forward by suppliers suggests that Apple is preparing for a public reveal in September 2026, which would match Apple’s usual release period for its major iPhone models.

Despite the long development cycle, Apple’s foldable has faced many engineering hurdles. The company has been working with NewRixing and Amphenol for hinge components and relying on Samsung Display for inner screens. These partnerships are aimed at solving one of the most common complaints about foldables: the crease.

A visible crease remains one of the weakest points of current foldable phones. Several brands have improved their hinges, screen layers, and panel materials, but no company has totally eliminated the crease. Apple’s suppliers claim that the company has made progress in this area by using high-strength liquid metal hinges and new screen lamination methods. If accurate, this could give Apple a strong edge, as many users still hesitate to buy a foldable due to the line across the middle of the display. The decision to invest heavily in this system has reportedly increased production costs, which is one of the reasons analysts expect the iPhone Fold to carry a high price.

Pricing has been the most talked-about aspect of this upcoming device. Estimates from researchers, including Arthur Liao and reports from IDC, point to a price near $2,400. This would place the iPhone Fold above the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series and many other foldable models. Apple already sells some of the most expensive smartphones on the market, and a premium foldable would likely follow that pattern.

IDC’s projections indicate that despite the price, Apple could capture more than 22% of foldable unit share in its first year and around 34% of total market value. These figures reflect both Apple’s strong brand loyalty and the high selling price of the device, which raises its contribution to the overall market value.

The excitement around the foldable category in 2026 is not limited to Apple. Samsung is expected to launch its Galaxy Z Trifold early in the year, giving users a larger and more complex design that folds twice like a brochure. Huawei is predicted to grow its foldable shipments through its HarmonyOS Next models, strengthening its position in markets where it still has solid user support.

Yet analysts highlight that Apple’s entry is seen as the main turning point for broader consumer interest. IDC’s forecast suggests that the foldable market may grow by around 30% in 2026, compared to 6% in an earlier projection made before Apple’s reported plans solidified.

The detailed specifications of the iPhone Fold remain a mix of leaks and analyst guesses. Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the more reliable sources on Apple’s hardware planning, has said that the device may include a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer panel. Other reports have suggested a thinner profile, comparing the foldable to two iPhone Air models placed together.

Some sources also believe the device may revive Touch ID, placing it in a side-mounted sensor, though Apple typically relies on Face ID for its flagship models. There are also rumours that the device could carry four cameras: two on the back, one internal camera for video calls and unfolded use, and one front camera on the cover display.

One of the ongoing concerns for users considering foldables is battery life. Foldable phones usually run two screens, require stronger chips, and often have a thicker body with less room for large batteries. Apple has made improvements in power efficiency with devices like the iPhone Air, which performs well in battery tests. If the same level of refinement carries over to the iPhone Fold, it could help reduce user worries, though the demands of a large inner display will still be a challenge for any device in this category. Apple’s present iPhones often fall short of Android flagships in battery performance, which makes the expectations for the foldable even higher.

The supply chain for this project spans several countries. Samsung Display is providing the inner screen panels, while Apple is designing the panel layers, materials, and structure. Hon Hai Technology Group, also known as Foxconn, has set up a small production line to prepare the first test units. These early units help Apple identify problems before full manufacturing begins. Reports indicate that the hinge, display, and lightweight materials contribute heavily to the cost. Fubon Research has said that the combination of these components is one of the reasons the final price will remain high.

The broader market expectation is that Apple’s foldable will set a new mark for what a premium foldable phone can look like. For some buyers, the high price will be a clear drawback. For others, the promise of a crease-free design, strong build quality, and Apple’s software ecosystem could justify the cost. The company’s entry is expected to draw attention even from users who do not plan to switch immediately. Industry watchers believe that Apple’s presence may pressure rivals to refine their designs faster, cut prices, or introduce new styles to hold their ground.
