Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night program, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, has been suspended indefinitely after remarks he made about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk drew heavy criticism from regulators, broadcasters, and political figures.
The controversy began with Tuesday night’s monologue, where Kimmel suggested that Tyler Robinson, the man charged in Kirk’s death, was being misrepresented by political groups. His pointed comments sparked outrage from Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr and prompted Nexstar Media Group — one of the largest operators of ABC affiliate stations — to pull the show from its lineup. Within hours, ABC itself announced that the program would be taken off the air for the foreseeable future.
Remarks That Sparked Outrage
Kimmel’s comments addressed the political fallout from the Kirk shooting. He criticized efforts by some conservatives to frame Robinson in a way that distanced him from their movement. The remarks quickly caught the attention of Carr, who called the segment inappropriate and harmful.
Carr later appeared in a video interview with YouTuber Benny Johnson, where he suggested that Kimmel’s framing of the suspect’s politics could be grounds for serious consequences. He warned that broadcast licenses come with obligations under FCC rules and hinted that affiliates airing Kimmel’s show might face added scrutiny if the program continued in its current form.
FCC Chair Raises Pressure
In his discussion with Johnson, Carr emphasized that broadcasters are required to act in the public interest, and said that failing to address what he called “misleading narratives” could invite regulatory action. He suggested that ABC affiliates had a choice: change the way the show operates or face potential consequences.
Johnson asked whether Kimmel should issue an apology to Kirk’s family. Carr responded that an apology would be the bare minimum but also raised the possibility of suspension or other disciplinary measures. He underscored that the FCC has options to respond if content aired by license holders repeatedly violates standards tied to the public interest.
Nexstar Takes Action
Carr’s warnings reverberated quickly. Nexstar Media Group, which operates 28 ABC affiliates across the country, announced it would no longer broadcast Jimmy Kimmel Live! in any of its markets.
In a statement, Nexstar said Kimmel’s comments were “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse.” The company explained that the decision was made to protect the values of the communities it serves and to avoid further controversy.
Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, said the move was difficult but necessary, stressing that allowing Kimmel’s platform to continue was not in the public interest at the current moment. The preemption affects markets both large and midsize, including New Orleans and Salt Lake City.
ABC Suspends the Show
After Nexstar’s decision, ABC issued its own statement confirming that Jimmy Kimmel Live! had been suspended. The network said the program would be “pre-empted indefinitely.”
The suspension marks a significant step for ABC, which has aired the late-night talk show since 2003. Known for its mix of comedy, celebrity interviews, and political commentary, the program has become a staple of the network’s late-night programming. Its sudden absence underscores the seriousness of the backlash.
Divisions Within the FCC
Carr’s strong stance did not go unchallenged within the FCC. Commissioner Anna Gomez publicly pushed back, warning against using government authority to silence media figures, even when their comments are controversial.
On social media, Gomez wrote that political violence should never be used as an excuse for censorship or expanded government control. She argued that the administration’s growing tendency to suppress lawful expression — particularly satire and criticism of those in power — risked undermining free speech protections. Gomez cautioned that yielding to such measures could allow those in authority to define the boundaries of debate, which would threaten the foundation of a free society.
Wider Political Context
Kimmel’s suspension highlights how entertainment and politics continue to collide in today’s polarized climate. His removal follows other high-profile media developments during President Donald Trump’s second term, including the announced cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show and cuts to federal funding for public broadcasters like NPR and PBS.
Carr suggested that these changes reflect a shift in how traditional media operates, claiming that some figures in entertainment were struggling to hold onto influence as public opinion evolves. At the same time, the FCC’s rarely enforced “news distortion” rule has returned to the spotlight, with critics warning it could become a political tool to suppress viewpoints under the guise of regulation.
