Jony Ive x OpenAI Hardware Leak: Project "Gumdrop" AI Pen Features, Launch Date, and Design Details

Rumors have been flying around the technology community nonstop ever since the collaboration of former Apple design legend Jony Ive with the head of OpenAI, Sam Altman, was revealed to develop the first consumer hardware product powered by AI.

Although there have been strict whispers about the nature of the collaboration over the past several months, we finally have some insight courtesy of the latest rumors.

This tipster goes by the name Smart Pikachu on X and revealed the two are working on a project that’s surprisingly simple yet seems revolutionary in nature,  an AI-powered pen! Yes, you read it correctly.

After all the rumors and speculations on what the world’s greatest minds and innovators could be working on in terms of a revolutionary device, it seems like the answer lies in the palm of your hand, or more specifically, in your pocket!

The codename for this device within the company is “Gumdrop,” and Foxconn, the manufacturing behemoth known for assembling numerous devices for Apple, will apparently build it for them.

This is not surprising since Ive has had so many years of experience working for Apple and, consequently, knew about Foxconn’s manufacturing prowess.

But here’s the really intriguing part: the gadget may not be a simple pen after all. According to the leak, the gadget may have more than one use, such as a portable audio player. The exact shape of the gadget has not been revealed, but the idea of an AI-enabled pen appears to be the central idea here.

But the question remains: what would the AI pen actually do? The most immediate function would probably be to translate handwritten messages into digital form, but with the involvement of OpenAI, we can look forward to something much more complex.

Jony Ive and Sam Altman’s $700 Bet on Post-Smartphone Hardware

It could integrate with ChatGPT to the point where the pen realizes the context and summarizes your thoughts into useful outlines. It could even point out the subsequent steps you need to take based on the content you write.

He had already confirmed that a functional prototype exists, so it’s not just a case of the device being vapourware. Further, looking at the timelines that are emerging, the device is also likely to be launched in the first half of 2027.

Nevertheless, there’s a catch that may make consumers think twice before buying this gadget. The price that is supposed to be attached to this pen is quite high in value. The cost may vary anywhere between 55,000 and 65,000 rupees, which is approximately in the range of 650-770 dollars.

And there may also be further costs involved. It has been speculated that OpenAI will sell the device along with a mandatory subscription to ChatGPT, thereby increasing the price of ownership with monthly payments, along with the one-time payment for purchasing the device. This will make the device more expensive, but advanced features of AI will also be accommodated by users.

It’s more than another gadget. This is the collaboration of Ive and Altman to define what AI hardware looks like in the post-smartphone era. While companies have fiddled with AI pins, glasses, and other wearables, this sees mixed results-a pen offers both something familiar and forward-thinking.

Can Jony Ive and Sam Altman’s OpenAI Redefine the Digital Experience?

Jony Ive’s design philosophy has always been rooted in the attempt to make technology feel instinctive and human. Combine that with OpenAI’s sophisticated language models, and the result could be a device that truly extends how people think and work, rather than another screen to stare at.

The timing is a bit awkward, though. OpenAI currently struggles with strong competition from Google’s Gemini models, which many believe have finally caught up-or even surpassed-ChatGPT in some ways. Releasing a high-end hardware product while your core AI technology is coming under increased competition could be a gamble.

Whether or not this particular AI pen will succeed may well depend on implementation. Can Ive and Altman make something that is magical enough to warrant the cost? Will the implementation of the AI tools be smooth enough that they become irreplaceable? But possibly most important of all: Can they make consumers believe that they need one of these pens in the first place?

We are still a year and a half away from the possible launch of the device in the market. A lot can happen in the meantime, and OpenAI can work on some improvements to the device concept, the pricing model, or some other functionalities that might surprise us.

One thing’s for sure: when two visionary minds like Jony Ive and Sam Altman come together in the world of technology, the result is always going to be something significant. Whether this AI pen turns out to be the next big innovation or a pricey gadget remains to be seen, but this one’s definitely one to watch out for.
