Ubisoft has confirmed that Julian Gerighty, the creative force behind The Division franchise, has officially left Massive Entertainment to join Electronic Arts’ Battlefield Studios. The move comes just a week after Gerighty publicly spoke about the future of The Division 3, making the announcement all the more surprising.
The studio acknowledged his departure in a social media statement, thanking him for his contributions and assuring fans that the franchise remains in steady hands.
A Key Creative Figure Steps Away
Gerighty has been one of the defining voices behind The Division series, shaping its tone, world-building, and long-term vision. His exit marks the end of a significant chapter for Massive Entertainment, where he played a central role in multiple titles, including The Division 2 and the recently released Star Wars Outlaws.
In its statement, Ubisoft said:
“While we’ll miss him, his mark will live on at Massive and we’ll continue to bring the world he’s been part of creating to our players for years to come.”
The company was quick to reassure fans that the roadmap for the franchise remains unchanged.
What Happens to The Division Now?
Ubisoft confirmed that longtime Division veterans Yannick Banchereau and Mathias Karlson will continue as creative directors for The Division 2 and The Division 3. Meanwhile, Massive Entertainment veteran Magnus Jansen has returned to lead development on The Division 2: Survivors, the series’ upcoming extraction-based experience.
According to Ubisoft, the teams responsible for the franchise remain intact, and development across all projects is continuing as planned.
For players worried about instability, the message is clear: the vision for The Division isn’t shifting, even if one of its key architects has moved on.
Gerighty’s Message to Fans
Gerighty addressed the departure himself in a brief but heartfelt message shared online.
“Agents! Quick update from the Base of Operations: It’s time for me to hang up my go bag (keeping the watch) as I go on another grand adventure.
The Division future burns bright, and I can’t wait for you to discover what the teams have been working on.”
His tone made it clear this was a personal decision rather than a sudden or forced exit.
A Move to Battlefield Amid Change at EA
While EA has yet to clarify Gerighty’s exact role, he has joined Battlefield Studios at a pivotal moment. The franchise is undergoing a major transition following the death of Battlefield boss Vince Zampella in a tragic car accident late last year.
Gerighty’s arrival signals EA’s intent to bring in experienced creative leadership as it works to redefine the future of Battlefield.
A Changing Time for Ubisoft Massive
The news also follows Ubisoft’s recent announcement of a proposed restructuring at Massive Entertainment, which could result in around 55 job losses. Combined with Gerighty’s departure, it highlights a period of transition for the studio.
Still, Ubisoft maintains that its commitment to The Division franchise remains strong, with multiple projects in active development.
For fans, the takeaway is simple: one era has ended, but the world of The Division is far from done.
