King Charles Matches Rishi Sunak’s Wealth in UK Rich List, Hindujas Remain at Top

King Charles III’s own fortune increased by £30 million in the last year to reach £640 million, marking an important climb on the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List. The 76-year-old monarch is now 20 spots higher than he was before, sharing 238th place with former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his spouse, Akshata Murty. A profitable investment portfolio, the inheritance of valuable estates, and higher income from the Crown Estate—which has profited from lucrative wind farm licenses—are all factors in King Charles’ increasing fortune.

The Sunday Times notes that most royal assets, such as Buckingham Palace and the Crown Jewels, are not counted in the King’s personal wealth as they are held “in the right of the Crown” and not privately owned. Instead, the bulk of Charles’ fortune comes from private estates like Balmoral in Scotland and Sandringham in Norfolk, as well as investments inherited from his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The Crown Estate’s recent wind farm deals have doubled its profits, boosting the sovereign grant that funds the royal family’s official activities, though these assets themselves are not included in the personal valuation.

Sunak’s Wealth Holds Steady Despite Market Fluctuations:

Rishi Sunak, the former Prime Minister, and his wife Akshata Murty, have also been listed with a combined fortune of £640 million, matching the King’s wealth. While Sunak’s transition from politics to academia and public speaking has kept his income robust, Murty’s wealth has seen some volatility due to fluctuations in Infosys shares, the Indian tech giant co-founded by her father. Despite a dip in the value of Infosys, Murty still received dividends worth £7.5 million last year, and the couple improved their rank from 245th in the previous year’s list.

Sunak’s recent career moves include a part-time role at Stanford University and joining the Washington Speakers Bureau, ensuring a steady stream of income even after his departure from 10 Downing Street. The couple’s financial resilience, despite market headwinds, underscores the diversified nature of their wealth.

Hinduja Family Maintains Top Spot Amid Billionaire Decline:

At the top of the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List, the Indian-origin Hinduja family has retained its position as the UK’s wealthiest, with an estimated fortune of £35.3 billion. This marks the fourth consecutive year the Hindujas have led the list, although their wealth has decreased by £2 billion since last year. The family’s business interests span banking, automotive, energy, and real estate, both in the UK and globally.

The Reuben brothers, David and Simon, are second on the list with a net worth of £26.9 billion, followed by investor Sir Leonard Blavatnik at £25.7 billion. Despite the continued dominance of established names at the top, the 2025 list reveals a notable contraction in the UK’s billionaire class. The number of billionaires has dropped to 156 from 165 in 2024, marking the sharpest fall in the list’s 37-year history. This trend reflects broader economic challenges, including inflation and shifts in global investment patterns, which have impacted the fortunes of many at the top.

Changing Landscape of Wealth in the UK:

The 2025 Sunday Times Rich List not only highlights the rising fortunes of King Charles and the steady wealth of Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty but also signals a changing landscape among the UK’s elite. The sharp drop in the number of billionaires points to a period of financial turbulence, with fewer individuals managing to retain or grow their fortunes amid economic headwinds.

King Charles’ rise in the rankings is especially remarkable because his personal wealth has nearly doubled that of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, whose wealth was estimated to be £370 million in 2022. It now exceeds the wealth of many British celebrities and corporate leaders. The monarch’s financial situation reflects both the long-term worth of inherited assets and careful management and planned investments.

International commercial interests have played an important role in the global nature of wealth in the UK, as seen by the Hinduja family’s continuous domination at the top of the list. The 2025 rich list provides a glimpse of both long-lasting dynasties and the new realities facing Britain’s financial elite as the ranks of the ultra-wealthy expand and contract.
