The world of social media is never short of controversies, and the latest clash between Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal and comedian Kunal Kamra is grabbing significant attention. What began as a critique over Ola’s electric scooters soon spiralled into a heated online argument, with the CEO of one of India’s largest e-scooter companies finding himself at the receiving end of severe backlash.
The confrontation has raised questions about how companies respond to customer grievances, especially when aired on public platforms.
The Spark: Kamra’s Tweet
The incident began when stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra shared a tweet aimed at Bhavish Aggarwal, criticising the state of Ola’s electric two-wheelers. Kamra shared a photo showing scooters from Ola Electric gathering dust at a service centre, suggesting that many vehicles were left abandoned. His post was a direct response to a tweet by Aggarwal about the Ola Gigafactory, which is being marketed as a major development in the electric vehicle (EV) industry.
Do indian consumers have a voice?
Do they deserve this?
Two wheelers are many daily wage workers lifeline…@nitin_gadkari is this how Indians will get to using EV’s? @jagograhakjago any word?
Anyone who has an issue with OLA electric leave your story below tagging all… https://t.co/G2zdIs15wh pic.twitter.com/EhJmAzhCmt— Kunal Kamra (@kunalkamra88) October 6, 2024
Kamra’s tweet hit a nerve with Aggarwal. The comedian’s message wasn’t just about abandoned scooters—it raised a broader issue of whether Indian consumers have a voice and questioned if they deserve better treatment. Kamra’s tweet read:
“Do Indian consumers have a voice? Do they deserve this? Two-wheelers are many daily wage workers’ lifeline… @nitin_gadkari is this how Indians will get to using EVs? @jagograhakjago any word?”

His post opened the floodgates for Ola customers who were unhappy with their experience, with many sharing their dissatisfaction under the same tweet.
Bhavish Aggarwal’s Reaction
Aggarwal, instead of addressing the complaints and concerns raised by Kamra and others, responded with a series of personal attacks. He invited Kamra to work for Ola, offering him a job and mocking his stand-up career. In one of his tweets, Aggarwal quipped,
“Chot lagi? Dard hua? Aaja service center. Bahut kaam hai. I will pay better than your flop shows pay you.”
Kamra, known for his sharp wit, didn’t let the matter slide. He continued to post tweets criticising Ola, asking about the possibility of a “Total Refund” for customers who were unhappy with the service. Aggarwal once again reacted poorly, writing,
“Comedian ban na sake, chaudhary banne chale!”
(Loosely translated as: “You couldn’t make it as a comedian, but now you want to act like a leader.”)
Backlash from the Public
This spat, which played out publicly on X (formerly Twitter), attracted widespread criticism. Many users sided with Kamra, calling out Aggarwal’s arrogance and failure to acknowledge the valid concerns about Ola’s products and services. Netizens and public figures alike weighed in on the matter, with some tweeting humorous memes while others offered constructive criticism about how the situation was being handled.
Comedian ban na sake, chaudhary banne chale.
Do your research better next time. And the offer to come and help us out in our service center remains open. Take up the challenge. Maybe you’ll learn some real skills for a change. https://t.co/4KekvB5Qbu

The comedian-entrepreneur spat did not go unnoticed, as memes and roasts flooded social media. One tweet joked that Aggarwal was the “Kangana Ranaut of Entrepreneurs,” a reference to the Bollywood actor known for her controversial online statements. Another user commented,
“VC money really has inflated your fragile ego @bhash!”
Impact on Ola’s Image
While some of the public reactions were humorous, the controversy has done little to help Ola’s image. For months, Ola has been facing complaints about its service quality and after-sales support. Issues such as poor service at its centres, delays in refunds, and the difficulty of accessing repair services have plagued the company. Despite these issues, Aggarwal’s confrontational responses to criticism have only added fuel to the fire.
Seems @bhash has open a can of worms while attacking Kunal Kamra.. Its like an open secret, Ola was doing a paid promotion since last few weeks but not many were talking about it. Now unless theres a smart damage control, it will backfire badly. #OlaElectric pic.twitter.com/ZKGCEizk21

The timing couldn’t have been worse for Ola. The company’s shares dropped by 9% after the spat with Kamra went viral, and its stock has seen a steady decline over the past few months. From its peak performance after a strong stock market debut, the company’s stock has dropped by over 40%, primarily due to its inability to resolve customer issues and stiff competition in the EV market.
Many experts have also weighed in on the situation. Kranthi Bathini, Director of Equity Strategy at Wealthmills Securities, commented,
“Consumer complaints on social media do have an impact on the company… The current social media spat is going to have a medium to short-term impact.”
Ola, which currently holds a 27% market share in the Indian e-scooter segment, is seeing its market dominance weaken due to intensifying competition and unresolved service problems. Analysts have pointed out that while Ola may have captured a significant share of the market, customer dissatisfaction can significantly harm long-term growth.
Bhavish Aggarwal’s online altercation with Kunal Kamra may have been a lighthearted exchange for some, but it has serious implications for the company. The public nature of the spat has shone a spotlight on Ola’s service issues, customer complaints, and Aggarwal’s inability to respond to criticism constructively. Rather than addressing valid concerns, the CEO’s personal attacks have only hurt the company’s reputation.
