In a groundbreaking move, the UK’s Royal Navy has unveiled an advanced esports gaming suite aboard the HMS Prince of Wales, marking the first time a warship has featured a dedicated PC gaming zone of this scale. The initiative, born out of a collaboration with the British Esports Federation, signals a new era of tech-savvy military engagement, one that blends digital warfare simulations with morale-boosting leisure and skill-building platforms.
Located deep within the aircraft carrier, the state-of-the-art esports space boasts 12 Alienware Aurora gaming rigs equipped with NVIDIA RTX 4080 GPUs, professional-grade peripherals, and console gaming stations. The suite, glowing with RGB LEDs in a patriotic red and blue theme, has become a hub for competitive team-based titles such as Halo, Team Fortress 2, and Counter-Strike. While internet connectivity at sea limits online play, LAN parties have made a popular comeback, with weekly team tournaments now part of shipboard life.
Esports Now an Official Military Sport
Since March 2024, esports has been formally recognized by the Royal Navy as an official military sport. The move is designed not only to modernize leisure and wellness for personnel but also to support skill development in communication, strategic planning, and stress relief. Unlike standard recreation rooms that feature PlayStations or Xbox consoles, the Prince of Wales suite elevates the experience with high-performance PCs built for serious competition.

“Gaming has evolved into something far more powerful than simple entertainment,” said Chief Petty Officer Martin Miller, vice-chairman of the Navy’s esports committee and supervisor of the suite. “It’s become a channel for leadership training, mental resilience, and building camaraderie at sea.”
Miller, an avid player of Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, noted that the Navy is also considering expanding the setup, with tentative plans to incorporate racing simulators and make use of additional Alienware systems already onboard.
Recruitment Through Recreation
The suite is more than a morale booster; it’s a strategic recruitment tool. The Royal Navy has been exploring non-traditional methods to attract tech-savvy youth, especially as international tensions push defense forces to adapt and grow. By integrating gaming and esports into its culture, the Navy aims to appeal to a new generation familiar with digital landscapes and first-person shooters.
Chester King, President of the British Esports Federation, lauded the initiative: “We’re thrilled to partner with the Royal Navy. Gaming encourages teamwork, critical thinking, and strategic execution, all essential traits in both esports and military service.”
Beyond Gaming: Life Aboard the Prince of Wales
In addition to the esports suite, the HMS Prince of Wales offers other leisure amenities, including an inflatable swimming pool, a golf simulator, and a karaoke area, a clear effort to keep crew spirits high during long deployments. As military life evolves, such facilities could become standard across the fleet.
A New Age of Sail and Silicon
The Royal Navy’s integration of esports into its operations reflects a broader shift in how modern militaries engage with technology, wellness, and recruitment. With LAN tournaments now echoing through the halls of a warship, the line between recreation and readiness is being creatively and effectively redrawn.
For now, the message is clear: to join the future of military innovation, all you need is a controller and a uniform.
