Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and President-elect Donald Trump met on Wednesday at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, marking a rare face-to-face encounter between the two. This meeting, initiated by Zuckerberg, aims to repair their historically strained relationship. The discussions, which took place after Zuckerberg flew in on Tuesday, were said to be cordial, with Zuckerberg congratulating Trump on his victory. Later, the two shared dinner at Trump’s hotel, providing a further opportunity for dialogue.
A spokesperson for Meta emphasized that the gathering was a chance for Zuckerberg to connect with Trump’s team and discuss the future of American innovation. “Mark was grateful for the opportunity to meet and explore potential areas of collaboration,” the representative said.
Years of Tension Between the Two
This meeting represents a shift after years of tension. Trump has frequently accused Meta of suppressing conservative voices, particularly following the suspension of his accounts after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Meta suspended Trump’s accounts over concerns that his posts had incited violence, which sparked outrage among his supporters who viewed the action as censorship. Trump, calling the suspension an “insult” to his supporters, vowed retribution against Meta, including a personal campaign against Zuckerberg.
Though Trump’s accounts were reinstated in 2023, the rift continued, with Trump using his Truth Social platform to attack Zuckerberg, calling him an “enemy of the people” and warning him to “be careful.”
Shifting Attitudes in 2024
By 2024, Zuckerberg appears to have softened his approach to Trump. Earlier this year, he praised Trump’s defiant response to an assassination attempt, calling it “badass.” Zuckerberg also voiced frustration with the Biden administration’s alleged pressure on Meta to censor certain COVID-19 content, a stance that aligned with Trump’s political base.
Zuckerberg’s efforts to mend fences included at least two private phone calls with Trump, one of which saw him offering prayers for Trump’s safety after the assassination attempt. Political commentator Stephen Miller, now serving as Trump’s deputy chief of staff, suggested that Zuckerberg’s outreach was partly motivated by his desire to align with Trump’s economic plans. Miller noted that Zuckerberg has expressed his support for Trump’s “national renewal.”
Meta Faces Conservative Backlash
Zuckerberg’s outreach also comes at a time when Meta faces mounting criticism from conservatives, who accuse the company of censoring right-wing viewpoints. Some Republican lawmakers have even called for the regulation of Meta, claiming it unfairly stifles free speech. Trump has echoed these concerns, going so far as to demand Zuckerberg be held accountable for alleged efforts to undermine him in the 2020 election.
As Trump’s second term approaches, Meta is bracing for more scrutiny. Company executives are reportedly working to build a more cooperative relationship with the incoming administration to avoid additional regulatory challenges.
The Musk Factor: Competition in Trump’s Orbit
The meeting between Zuckerberg and Trump also highlights the growing influence of other tech leaders in Trump’s orbit, particularly Elon Musk. Musk, who took control of Twitter (now X) in 2022, has become one of Trump’s strongest allies. He reinstated Trump’s X account after acquiring the platform and has been a significant donor to Trump’s campaign. Musk also serves on a panel aimed at improving government efficiency, further cementing his role as a key figure in Trump’s circle.
