Mercedes-Benz is preparing to lift the covers off its next-generation electric SUV, but the internet got there first. Just days before the official unveiling on September 7 (European time), images of the all-electric GLC with EQ Technology have surfaced online, offering an early look at the brand’s latest move in its electrification strategy.
Leaked Images Show a More Familiar Mercedes Design
The leaked photos first appeared on the Mercedes-Benz subreddit and Kindel Auto’s Instagram account. While it’s not clear how they were obtained, they align closely with earlier spy shots, making them look genuine.
Unlike the EQE SUV and EQS SUV, the new GLC EV avoids the “jellybean” aerodynamic design that has divided opinions. Instead, it adopts a more traditional SUV profile that feels closer to the combustion-engine GLC, signaling Mercedes’ new approach: future EVs will be visually in line with the rest of the brand’s lineup.
Striking Front End with Illuminated Grille
The GLC EV’s nose is longer and flatter than its EQ siblings, ditching the front quarter light that made those models resemble MPVs. What stands out most is its bold faux grille, available with an illuminated option featuring 942 LED pixels. This lighting not only traces the bars of the grille but also frames the iconic three-pointed star.
The SUV also introduces Mercedes’ latest star-shaped headlight signature, which is mirrored at the rear. A full-width light bar stretches across the back, housing tail-lamps with the same star motif — a detail that cements the GLC EV’s futuristic look while staying consistent with the brand’s new design language.
Inside: The Hyperscreen Takes Center Stage
The exterior leak comes just a day after Mercedes officially revealed the interior. The centerpiece is the optional 39.1-inch Hyperscreen, which spans almost the entire width of the dashboard. This expansive digital display blends driver information, infotainment, and passenger screens into one continuous panel, underscoring the brand’s tech-forward positioning.
Replacing the EQC and Taking on BMW
The GLC with EQ Technology will effectively replace the EQC, Mercedes’ first mass-market electric SUV. It arrives in a competitive moment, squaring off directly with BMW’s newly unveiled iX3. Both models are built on dedicated EV architectures and share little beyond their names with their petrol and diesel siblings.
Whereas the current petrol-powered GLC rides on the MRA2 platform, the new EV debuts the MB.EA architecture. This new electric-only platform underpins Mercedes’ next wave of electric vehicles.
Range, Power, and Battery Options
Under the skin, the GLC EV promises serious flexibility. It will use an 800-volt system for faster charging, and buyers can choose between single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive setups. Top versions will deliver up to 500kW of power, putting them in line with high-performance EV rivals.
Battery chemistry will also vary by model. Entry variants will feature cost-efficient lithium iron phosphate (LFP) packs, while premium models adopt nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) for higher energy density. Depending on the configuration, the GLC EV’s range is expected to fall between 500 and 800 kilometres (WLTP).
A Critical Launch for Mercedes-Benz
With the GLC EV, Mercedes is repositioning its electric strategy after the EQC’s lukewarm reception. By aligning the design more closely with its traditional lineup while offering cutting-edge performance and range, the company is hoping to strike the balance customers want in the EV era.
The official reveal on September 7 will confirm details, but the early glimpse suggests Mercedes is taking a bold yet familiar step forward.
