If you have ever considered integrating glasses in your lifestyle, perhaps the Meta, Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses are worth giving a try. But here is the catch — others see the captured images or videos through such glasses, when you ask Meta AI to interpret them, you share them with Meta. And yes, Meta might use them to train its AI models. Let’s take a closer look at the functioning of this smart glass which lies behind the lens of the smart glass.

Meta’s New Smart Glasses and AI training

Picture this: You wear the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses you bought online, take a picture and then tell the AI to explain it. It is possible that you’re looking for something to wear and you’re running your eyes over your clothes, or maybe you’re simply interested in something you noticed around you. What happens next? As per Meta, every image or video you share with Meta AI existing in geographical areas such as the U.S and Canada could be used to enhance the performance of monopoly models including its AI.

I mean, Meta doesn’t start training AI on every picture or video you take as a default now. If all you do is take pictures, those won’t be used unless you request Meta AI to look into those images. But once you have collected them they are ready to feed straight into the AI training model.

What Does This Mean for Your Privacy?

Envision that you are in your house wearing your smart glasses taking images of home spaces, members or even the documents that you have. These images can be submitted to Meta AI for an analysis and may be used to train future AI models and stored accordingly.

They also note these features are “multimodal,” or both images and videos and serve to enhance how Meta AI interacts with you. Which does not prevent the concern that these contestants may not get fully informed of what they are getting into when dealing with these smart glasses.

The Bigger Picture: What Happens with Your Data?

Thus, the more images Meta AI examines, the more data it collects. This implies that the company may have a pool of pictures, videos and even voice clips if the users choose to participate.

So Meta is not the only player in this game. Other technology corporations, such as Snap, are also experimenting with smart glasses. These are AI-driven gadgets that frequently come with a camera – people felt the same way about Google Glasses years ago. Do you recall the hype that was made back in days? It’s not that the privacy issues have been solved and have been avoided — they are further expanding with the advancement in technology.

Opting Out

If the idea of your images freely traveling through the AI training realms does bother you, there’s a way to opt out. The key is to never ask Meta AI to analyze your photos or videos to begin with. However, if you enjoy the AI suggestion services and thirst for these characteristics, you are, in fact, becoming a part of Meta’s data training cohort.

Moreover, similar to Amazon, Meta’s terms state that transcriptions of voice interactions made through the smart glasses are stored by default, however, it is your choice whether or not you want your actual voice recordings to be used for training the algorithms of AI. While you are still in some capacity controlling the interactions, it is still being consumed by AI in one way or another.

The Bottom Line

This year, Meta introduced Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses to the market and showed how society will interact with artificial Intelligence. It has made it simple and enjoyable to learn about the world in a different way but the students should not lose focus on modern technological costs. Any photo or video that you upload to Meta AI could be mined to create future AI even better.
