Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced on Friday that the company plans to invest over $60 billion in AI in 2025. The tech giant aims to dominate the AI sector with groundbreaking innovations and products. To support its AI ambitions, Meta plans to invest $60 billion or more in building a massive new data center.
Zuckerberg called 2025 a pivotal year for AI in a post on Facebook. He revealed that Meta is developing Meta AI, which is expected to become the leading digital assistant, serving over a billion users globally. Moreover, the company’s latest AI model, Llama 4, is projected to lead advancements in the field.
Meta is also working on creating an AI-driven “engineer” capable of contributing directly to coding for research and development.
Massive Infrastructure Expansion
Meta plans to invest $60 billion or more in AI by 2025 to dominate the AI sector. Meta plans to construct a large data center to support its AI operations. This project is expected to involve $60–$65 billion in capital expenditures in 2025, significantly increasing the company’s investments compared to the $38–$40 billion spent in 2024. Despite these expenses, the company is confident about its financial capacity to continue investments in the coming years, according to Meta’s Chief Financial Officer Susan Li.
Zuckerberg highlighted that this effort would drive innovation, strengthen core products, and maintain America’s leadership in AI technology.
Competing AI Investments
As part of its growth strategy, Meta plans to invest $60 billion or more to enhance its AI infrastructure. Meta’s announcement comes amid a surge in global AI investments. U.S. President Donald Trump recently unveiled a $500 billion AI infrastructure project named “Stargate.” The venture, led by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, aims to build cutting-edge AI infrastructure over the next four years.
Meta’s decision to invest $60 billion in AI by 2025 signals its determination to dominate the technology sector. This aggressive push positions Meta as a major player in AI development, alongside companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Nvidia. However, the initiative has sparked controversy. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, criticized the project, claiming that the primary investors lack the necessary funds. The remark reflects a rare public disagreement between Musk and Trump, despite Musk’s significant financial contributions to Trump’s administration.
Meanwhile, Microsoft announced plans to invest $80 billion this fiscal year to expand its AI data centers and deploy AI-driven cloud applications. Microsoft President Brad Smith emphasized the importance of international collaboration and strategic investments in maintaining the U.S.’s technological edge.
The Race for AI Dominance
Tech giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta continue to drive advancements in AI models, spurring intense competition. Nvidia, a leading producer of GPUs used for AI training, reached a market valuation of $3.6 trillion in 2024. GPUs remain a crucial element for developing state-of-the-art AI systems.
Last January, Meta finalized a multi-billion-dollar deal with Nvidia to purchase 350,000 H100 GPUs. By the end of 2025, Meta expects to have over 1.3 million GPUs in operation.
New Data Center in Louisiana
Meta’s planned data center will be constructed in Richland Parish, Louisiana, a rural area with a population of around 19,000. The facility will play a vital role in developing future iterations of Meta’s AI models, including Llama.
This announcement follows the release of Llama 3.3 and reflects Meta’s long-term commitment to scaling its AI capabilities. In an era when AI is reshaping industries, Meta’s massive investment demonstrates the company’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of technological innovation.
