Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Meta AI, the company’s artificial intelligence chatbot, has reached over 400 million monthly active users across its platforms. Meta’s AI assistant has 400 million monthly active users, making it one of the fastest-growing AI tools in the market. Approximately 185 million users engage with the chatbot on a weekly basis, underscoring its rapid expansion in the competitive landscape against rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft’s Copilot.
In a post on Threads, Zuckerberg highlighted the significant growth of Meta AI, mentioning that the chatbot is “growing quickly, and we haven’t even rolled out in the UK, Brazil, or EU yet.” However, specific usage data for different regions were not provided. Meta’s CFO, Susan Li, had previously indicated that India remains the largest market for Meta AI.
India Leads in User Base Across Meta Platforms
Despite facing tough competition from other companies, Meta’s AI assistant has 400 million monthly active users across its platforms. India has a combined user base of over one billion across Meta’s various apps, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Threads. With this extensive reach, Meta aims to position Meta AI as the most widely used AI assistant by the end of the year. Current statistics indicate that the chatbot is on track to achieve this goal, with ChatGPT currently holding the top spot with over 200 million weekly users.
Meta AI is integrated into several of Meta’s platforms, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, which collectively reach about 3 billion daily users. The chatbot is also available as a standalone website and has been integrated into Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Future plans include incorporating Meta AI into Meta Quest mixed-reality headsets.
Expansion and Language Support
Meta AI was initially launched in September 2023 and expanded to more than 22 countries, including the United States, Australia, and India, where it became available in June. Recently, Meta introduced support for seven additional languages, including Hindi and Hinglish, broadening its appeal to a more diverse user base.
In addition to Meta AI, Zuckerberg highlighted the growing use of Meta’s open-source Llama models. These models have been downloaded nearly 350 million times since their launch, with 20 million downloads in the past month alone. Usage of Llama models across major cloud platforms, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, has more than doubled from May to July 2024. The latest version, Llama 3.1, was released in July, following the release of Llama 3 earlier in the year.
Meta attributes the success of the Llama models to their open-source nature, although there has been some debate about the transparency of the training data used for these models. The company’s decision to offer the models for free has significantly contributed to their widespread adoption.
Strategic Integration Drives Meta AI’s Growth
Meta’s AI assistant has 400 million monthly active users, a milestone that underscores its growing influence in the AI market. The integration of Meta AI across Meta’s major services, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, has played a key role in its rapid growth. These platforms are used by billions of people globally, providing a vast user base for the chatbot. Meta AI can be used for a variety of purposes, including writing text, generating images, and retrieving information from the web.
Despite its growth, the chatbot has a relatively low retention rate compared to its massive exposure, with 400 million active users out of the 3 billion potential users across Meta’s platforms. Factors contributing to this include a need for more awareness about AI technology and hesitation in adopting AI tools, especially in developing regions. Additionally, Meta’s strategy of integrating AI results into search queries may have led to initial engagement but needed more user retention.
