Grand Theft Auto fans received one of the ultimate surprises this week, as Rockstar Games revealed that Michael De Santa, one of the three main protagonists of GTA 5, will be returning in the latest GTA Online update.
For the first time in well over a decade since the release of the game originally in 2013, players can finally see what happened with the charismatic bank robber turned family man.
The reunion is very much on in the trailer for “A Safehouse in the Hills,” a new DLC expansion for GTA Online. The teaser reveals a posh new pad in the Hollywood Hills, intended for the most successful online crooks.
What everyone latched onto, though, was the front door greeting from a significantly grey-haired Michael De Santa alongside wife Amanda. Actor Ned Luke returns to bring one of the most beloved characters back after all this time.
But that’s not all the update does: It settles a debate that’s been raging since 2013, which of GTA 5’s story endings is actually canon? The answer is now official: Option C, also known as “Deathwish,” is the true ending to Michael, Franklin, and Trevor’s wild adventure through Los Santos.
GTA V’s Canonical Ending Confirmed: Why Michael’s Appearance in GTA Online Validates “Deathwish”
For those who may need a little refresher, the story of GTA 5 concludes by offering the player three possible ending options. In Option A, “Something Sensible,” Trevor will die but leave Michael and Franklin alive. Option B, “The Time’s Come,” has Michael dying to leave Franklin and Trevor standing.
Option C, “Deathwish,” remains the only ending where all three protagonists manage to survive upon completion of the final mission called “The Third Way.”

With Michael’s appearance in GTA Online, Rockstar has effectively confirmed that “Deathwish” is the canonical ending, which makes perfect sense when you consider that all three main characters have now appeared in the online mode, which takes place chronologically after the events of GTA 5’s single-player campaign.
Franklin was always a natural fit for GTA Online since he is one of the few characters to survive in all three possible endings. He has been active within the online world, giving missions to players and interacting throughout various updates.
Trevor has also been with the service since 2013, calling on player’s phones and offering his signature brand of chaotic missions.
Michael has, until now, remained all but absent from the online experience. Sharp-eared players might remember a subtle reference to him from a 2021 update: during a mission where Franklin chases golfers through the Richards Majestic Studios film lot, he mentions knowing “one of the producers around here” and hopes “his ass ain’t work today.”
The general interpretation was that this was a nod to Michael, who works at the studio in pursuit of his Hollywood dreams in the main game’s story.
Michael De Santa Returns to Offer Closure for Fans
Which begs the question: why bring Michael back now, after twelve years? The update dropped on the heels of what was originally going to be GTA 6’s release date of November 19, 2025, but it has since been delayed into 2026.
Could this be Rockstar’s sendoff to the GTA 5 trio before shifting full attention to the next generation of characters in Lucia and Jason?
The older Michael in this trailer is a nod from Rockstar towards how much time has passed since the events of the original, and within it. It’s a considerate act that adds to the lived-in quality of the GTA universe. Knowing he is also still with Amanda is another good indication that his main game storyline arc – holding his family together despite his prior crimes – ended rather well for him.
For long-time fans of GTA 5, witnessing Michael again brings a sense of closure and nostalgia. The choice to canonize the “Deathwish” ending will more than likely make most players happy, since, all things considered, it’s the most satisfying conclusion in which everybody gets their happy ending-or as happy as it can be in the morally grey world of Grand Theft Auto.
With Rockstar getting ready to launch GTA 6 next year, this update is one final, loving tribute to the characters who’ve entertained millions of players over the past decade. Whether it’s truly the last we’ll see of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor remains to be seen, but for now, fans can rest easy knowing their favorite trio all made it out alive.
