NetherRealm Studios Faces Layoffs, Closing Mobile Division and Mortal Kombat Onslaught

Adding to the unfortunate trend plaguing the gaming industry in 2024, NetherRealm Studios, the renowned developer behind Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises, has been hit with layoffs. According to former employees and industry reports, the brunt of the cuts appears to have fallen on the studio’s entire mobile team.

News of the layoffs first surfaced through social media posts from affected staff. Quality Assurance Analyst Tony Lazzara confirmed on LinkedIn that “unfortunately, yesterday NetherRealm’s mobile team was shut down.” Lazzara’s message highlighted the impact on “a ton of very talented people” who lost their jobs despite working on “live services on multiple titles such as Mortal Kombat Mobile, Injustice 2, and Mortal Kombat Onslaught.”

Industry-Wide Turmoil: Layoffs and Their Ripple Effects on Gaming’s Future

While NetherRealm Studios hasn’t issued an official statement, reports from Insider-Gaming suggest at least 50 employees were impacted.

The closure of the mobile division raises questions about the future of NetherRealm’s mobile titles, particularly the recently released Mortal Kombat Onslaught, a beat ’em up RPG launched in October 2023. The news comes as a shock, especially considering Mortal Kombat Mobile received a well-received update just days before the layoffs.

While the specific reasons behind the layoffs remain unclear, they paint a concerning picture for the video game industry in 2024. NetherRealm’s situation follows a string of similar events throughout the year. In January, the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft resulted in nearly 2,000 layoffs. Embracer Group also saw significant workforce reductions, laying off over 4,500 employees between August 2023 and March 2024. Industry giants like Unity, Electronic Arts, and Sony Interactive Entertainment haven’t been spared either, with each reporting employee reductions exceeding 1,000.

The impact of these layoffs extends beyond the immediate loss of jobs. The disruption caused by studio restructuring and project cancellations can have a ripple effect, affecting development timelines and potentially delaying the release of highly anticipated titles.

Challenges and Shifts: The Future of NetherRealm Studios in a Dynamic Gaming Market

NetherRealm Studios is known for its dedication to its franchises, consistently delivering high-quality fighting games like the recent Mortal Kombat 11. The studio’s focus on narrative and brutal combat has garnered a loyal fanbase. However, the mobile market presents a different challenge compared to console and PC development. With fierce competition and the ever-evolving landscape of mobile gaming, staying profitable can be difficult. The decision to shut down the mobile division suggests that, despite the team’s efforts, the mobile projects may not have met financial expectations.

Looking ahead, the future of NetherRealm Studios remains to be seen. With the mobile team dissolved and the fate of Mortal Kombat Onslaught uncertain, fans are left wondering if this signals a shift in the studio’s development focus. Whether NetherRealm will pursue new mobile endeavors or concentrate solely on console and PC titles remains unanswered.

The layoffs at NetherRealm Studios are a stark reminder of the precarious nature of the gaming industry. While the reasons behind these cuts are complex, they highlight the challenges faced by developers in an ever-changing market. The impact extends not only to the affected employees but also to the gaming community as a whole, raising concerns about the future of beloved franchises and the potential delays in upcoming releases.
