OLED MacBook Air Coming in 2028, But with a Catch

Apple’s much-anticipated OLED MacBook Air is set to launch in 2028, bringing significant improvements to the popular laptop series. However, it will lack one key design upgrade that will set the MacBook Pro apart.

OLED Rollout Timeline

According to research firm Omdia, Apple is planning a phased rollout of OLED technology across its devices. Here’s the expected timeline:

  • 2026: OLED MacBook Pro models will debut, featuring a smaller hole-punch display.
  • 2028: The OLED MacBook Air will follow but retain the notch design.
  • iPad Updates: The OLED iPad mini 8 will launch in 2026, with the iPad Air getting its upgrade in 2027.

The staggered approach ensures Apple’s Pro models remain technologically superior, justifying their higher price tags.

Key Difference: Notch vs. Hole-Punch Display

The OLED MacBook Pro is set to be different by showing a new display design from the MacBook Air. While doing away with the notch for a more modern hole-punch display, the MacBook Pro will have it in 2026. On the other hand, that notch is going to still exist with the MacBook Air, including its 2028 OLDE version.

The notch retained on the Air lineup is quite in keeping with Apple’s differentiation strategy between Pro and non-Pro products. Pro models can then adopt and have the best features, making it attractive to professional and high-end users.

Benefits of OLED Technology

Even with the notch, the OLED MacBook Air will significantly upgrade current LCD models. Key advantages include:

  1. Enhanced Visual Quality: OLED displays deliver deeper blacks, higher contrast ratios, and more vibrant colours, providing a superior viewing experience.
  2. Improved Power Efficiency: OLED panels consume less power than LCDs, contributing to better battery life.
  3. Thinner and Lighter Design: OLED technology allows for thinner displays, which could result in a lighter, more portable MacBook Air.

Why the Delay for the MacBook Air?

That is apparent from the delay in adopting OLED for the MacBook Air until 2028. Apple is likely still working out some market strategy for this, as the Air remains a less expensive offering compared to the Pro variants. So, by first reserving it for the Pro models, Apple can keep its flagship products appealing and worthy of their prices.

Production costs and restrictions in the supply chain will also be an additional view of the delayed launch for the MacBook Air. OLED technology is still quite expensive, which makes it logical for Apple to compartmentalize its use in Pro models before extending it to all products in the future.

How This Impacts Buyers

Whatever upgrade you look for, it will be the OLED MacBook Pro, definitely cutting-edge design and technology by the users. The OLED MacBook Air would still be good for someone seeking a premium laptop but at a lower price.

MacBook Air’s OLED display adds almost a missing piece of the jigsaw in bringing to aesthetic visual quality, thereby making the decision worthwhile for users of old LCD models.

Stay tuned for updates as Apple’s OLED plans unfold. Whether you’re a Pro enthusiast or an Air fan, the future of MacBook innovation looks brighter than ever.
