The smartphone market is very alive today and OnePlus is right in the middle of it! OnePlus 13 may become the first Android flagship with something akin to iPhone MagSafe charging. But what does that imply for all of us?

What actually is MagSafe and Qi2?

To some extent, that is exactly what MagSafe does. Proprietary of Apple featuring magnets that orients the phone to the charging dock to enhance wireless charging experience. Say goodbye to a situation where you keep moving your phone hoping that it is charging – with MagSafe this is not the case.

As of now, Qi2 is the global version of MagSafe. It is somewhat similar to the “one size fits all” sort, which works fine with other brands of Smartphone, including the Android based ones. While this sounds amazing, there’s a little hiccup: Qi2 has not made an appearance on many Android devices. Only the HMD Skyline mid-range Android phone has embraced the Qi2 standard up to now. It was actually rumored that Google might be introducing the Qi2 standard in its new Pixel 9 series of s flagship Android but this also was not to be.

This is where the OnePlus 13 comes in to help make charging your phone a little less of a pain.

OnePlus 13: What’s the Buzz About?

As for the leaks, there is word and a rather bawdy social media announcement by Louis Lee, the president OnePlus China that the OnePlus 13 might have magnetic function. While it may not be explicit, with the specs being revealed, Qi2 style magnetic charging could easily be coming to OnePlus’s new flagship. This would indeed be big for Android users who have been looking to wireless charging but with greater fluidity.

The OnePlus 13 should be a flagship killer through and through. Based on leaks previously, it’s going to have a humongous battery – as no one wants their phone to drain in the middle of watching the latest on Netflix. It is also speculated to be packing the mighty Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which makes it one of the fastest Android out there.

Why does magnetic charging matter?

Perhaps you are nodding your head already, thinking that magnetic charging is good enough for me but why should you too?  But let me tell you that all this magnetic charging is not just hype, it is as practical as it comes. First of all, it correctly aligns the phone to the charger, which eliminates the heat and adds speed to the charging process. Plus, it allows you to enter a universe full of great accessories.

To OnePlus 13 users, this may translate to greater versatility in how they charge their phones, and nobody wants more tangled chargers littering up their living spaces.

Why Now?

You may ask, why Android phones do not use Qi2 to the fullest extent, though this technology already exists? Good technique takes time to prepare, or as the kids say today ‘It’s a process’. Qi2 was made official in late 2023, and now, in 2025, it’s time for it to shine. New devices such as the OnePlus 13 of the OEM effect the mainstream adoption of Qi2 amongst Android devices.

It is not a coincidence that OnePlus is preparing the OnePlus 13 for use of this technology. After the completion of Qi2 standard, it is expected that from 2024 onwards, apart from Apple devices some of the other phone models will shift towards this technology. The best time to release OnePlus 13, which is planned for China later this month, could hardly be better.

Wrapping It Up

The OnePlus 13 might just be the phone that changes how those of us who use Android phones look at wireless charging. That may well extend a helping hand to Qi2 or whatever they want to call it, the future that MagSafe promises, OnePlus is ready for and that is something.
