OpenAI is set to acquire Astral, a developer of popular open-source tools for the Python programming language. This acquisition is the next step towards strengthening the Codex platform, which will allow OpenAI to compete with other companies like Anthropic and its coding system, Claude Code.

On March 19, 2026, the acquisition was announced. However, the terms of the deal have not been disclosed to the public. The acquisition is yet to be approved by the relevant authorities and meet the necessary closing conditions. Upon the acquisition being completed, the Astral team will be integrated into the Codex team at OpenAI.

Astral is a developer of popular tools for the Python programming language. The tools have been popular due to their speed, simplicity, and reliability. Astral was founded by Charlie Marsh with backing from companies like Accel and Andreessen Horowitz.

Three of Astral’s tools stand out.

OpenAI Integrates Astral’s Toolchain to Evolve Codex into a Full-Scale Development Agent

First is UV, a tool that simplifies dependency and environment management. It helps developers install and manage packages with fewer steps. It also improves speed, which matters when projects grow large.

Second is Ruff, a fast linter and formatter. It checks code for errors and style issues. Developers use it to keep code clean and consistent. Ruff runs much faster than many older tools, which helps teams save time.

Third is ty, a type-checking tool. It enforces type safety across codebases. This reduces bugs and makes code easier to maintain. As Python projects scale, type safety becomes more important, and tools like ty fill that need.

Together, these tools handle key parts of the development process. They support everything from writing code to checking and maintaining it. Astral’s tools now see hundreds of millions of downloads each month, which shows how widely they are used.

OpenAI plans to use this foundation to expand Codex. Right now, Codex focuses on generating code from prompts. With Astral’s tools, it can move deeper into the workflow. This includes planning tasks, editing code, running checks, and verifying results.

This shift matters. Developers do more than write code. They manage dependencies, fix errors, and test systems. By covering more of these steps, Codex can become a more complete tool. It can move from assistant to active participant in the development process.

The timing also reflects rising competition. Anthropic has gained attention with Claude Code, which aims to support developers across similar workflows. Other companies are building tools that go beyond code generation. They focus on real-world use, where code must run, scale, and stay reliable.

OpenAI’s Ecosystem Expansion, Integrating Astral into Codex

Codex already has strong growth. It reports over 2 million weekly active users and has seen user numbers triple since early 2026. Adding Astral’s tools could help maintain that pace. It also gives OpenAI more control over key parts of the developer stack.

This acquisition fits a broader pattern. OpenAI has made several deals in a short time. In early 2026, it acquired Promptfoo, a company focused on AI security testing. Earlier, it moved into sectors like healthcare with Torch. In 2025, it completed a major $6.4 billion acquisition of io, which expanded its hardware and platform reach.

These moves show a clear strategy. OpenAI is not just building models. It is building a full ecosystem around them. This includes tools, infrastructure, and workflows that developers use every day.

Astral adds an important piece to that system. Its tools already sit inside many Python projects. By bringing them into Codex, OpenAI can link code generation with real development tasks. This creates a smoother experience for users.

At the same time, OpenAI has said it will keep Astral’s tools open source. This decision may help maintain trust within the developer community. Open-source tools rely on transparency and shared input. Keeping them open allows developers to keep using and improving them as before.

The success of this deal will depend on how well OpenAI integrates these tools. If done right, Codex could become a central hub for developers. It could handle more steps in the workflow without adding friction.

In a market that is moving fast, this kind of integration may set the pace.
