In a recent blog post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declared that the company now believes it knows how to build Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and is moving towards creating superintelligence. OpenAI is turning its attention to superintelligence, believing it could drive scientific breakthroughs beyond human capabilities. According to Altman, superintelligent tools could revolutionize scientific discovery and innovation, far surpassing human capabilities and increasing prosperity on a massive scale.

“We love our current products, but we are here for the glorious future,” Altman wrote. He believes that superintelligent AI could accelerate progress beyond what humans are currently capable of and bring about an era of unprecedented abundance.

The Path to Superintelligence

Altman has previously predicted that superintelligence might be just a few thousand days away, a forecast he stands by. He emphasized that the next few years would reveal the potential of AI and its profound impact on society.

“Superintelligent systems could change the output of companies significantly,” Altman noted, signaling that AI agents (AI systems capable of performing tasks autonomously) could start to join the workforce this year.

Despite these optimistic projections, Altman acknowledged the limitations of current AI technology, such as hallucinations and errors, which remain a significant hurdle. However, he expressed confidence that these challenges would be overcome in the near future.

Safety Concerns Loom Over AI’s Future

As OpenAI is turning its attention to superintelligence, the company faces mounting concerns about the safety of these advanced systems. OpenAI has acknowledged that successfully managing superintelligent AI is not guaranteed. In a blog post from July 2023, the company admitted it lacks solutions for controlling AI systems that could surpass human intelligence. There is growing concern that current alignment techniques will not be sufficient to ensure the safe operation of superintelligent AI.

OpenAI’s internal struggles have been highlighted by the departure of several key researchers, including those focused on AI safety. Former head of alignment, Jan Leike, who resigned in May 2024, criticized the company for prioritizing shiny products over safety protocols. Leike and others have warned that the potential risks associated with AGI must be taken seriously.

“We are long overdue in getting incredibly serious about the implications of AGI,” Leike said, urging the industry to prioritize safety as much as innovation.

As AI technology evolves, OpenAI is turning its attention to superintelligence in hopes of solving some of humanity’s most pressing challenges. The prospect of superintelligence, while still a distant vision for many, is becoming a more tangible possibility as companies like OpenAI push the boundaries of AI research. Altman’s remarks echo similar predictions from tech leaders like Elon Musk, who has stated that AI could be smarter than any single human within the next year, and even surpass human intelligence as a whole by 2029.

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son has also joined the conversation, predicting that AI could become 10,000 times smarter than humans within the next decade. Such rapid advancements raise critical questions about how to ensure these technologies are developed and controlled responsibly.

The Road Ahead

While Altman remains optimistic about the future of AI, the urgency of addressing safety concerns cannot be overstated. OpenAI and other leaders in the field must invest heavily in safety protocols to avoid the risks associated with superintelligent systems. As AI technology evolves, ensuring that it benefits humanity while preventing unintended consequences will be a key challenge.

“We continue to believe that iteratively putting great tools in the hands of people leads to great, broadly distributed outcomes,” Altman stated, suggesting that OpenAI will continue to prioritize both innovation and safety in its quest for superintelligence.
