Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, is envisioning a chatbot that goes beyond mere conversation. According to a recent discussion with him, he believes generative AI is a temporary phase, and the future lies in interactive AI. These AI systems would not only engage in conversation but also execute specified tasks by leveraging various software and engaging with individuals to accomplish objectives. Suleyman emphasizes the necessity of robust regulation for such advancements, expressing confidence in its achievability.

Suleyman’s perspective aligns with a growing sentiment that foresees a future abundant with increasingly autonomous software. What sets him apart is his role as co-founder of Inflection, a billion-dollar company boasting a team of top-tier talent from DeepMind, Meta, and OpenAI. Additionally, Inflection has secured a significant amount of specialized AI hardware through a strategic deal with Nvidia. Suleyman’s commitment to his vision is backed by both financial investment and determination to propel his endeavours further.

Suleyman has maintained a steadfast belief in the positive potential of technology since our initial conversation in early 2016. At that time, he had recently launched DeepMind Health and initiated research partnerships with various state-run regional healthcare providers in the UK.

Suleyman’s Transformative Path: From DeepMind to Inflection and Beyond

During my tenure at a magazine, we were on the brink of releasing an article alleging that DeepMind had not fully adhered to data protection regulations when obtaining records from approximately 1.6 million patients for the purpose of establishing these collaborations. This claim was later substantiated by a government inquiry.

Suleyman struggled to comprehend why we intended to publish a piece that seemed critical of his company’s endeavours to enhance healthcare. He emphasized that his long-standing aspiration had always been to contribute positively to the world.

In the seven years since that initial pivotal moment, Suleyman’s unwavering mission remains focused on doing good in the world. Speaking from his office in Palo Alto, he emphasizes this purpose that has guided his path.

After departing from DeepMind, Suleyman transitioned to Google to lead an AI policy team. Subsequently, in 2022, he established Inflection, a prominent AI firm backed by substantial investments from Microsoft, Nvidia, Bill Gates, and Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn. Earlier this year, he introduced Pi, a ChatGPT competitor distinguished by its pleasant and polite interactions. Additionally, he co-authored a book with writer and researcher Michael Bhaskar, titled “The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the 21st Century’s Greatest Dilemma,” delving into the future of AI.

Suleyman’s techno-optimism, though met with scepticism by some, remains resolute. His unique journey from a humble background to a tech multi-millionaire is evident in his dedication to making a positive impact. At 19, he left university to establish the Muslim Youth Helpline, a telephone counselling service, reflecting his early commitment to public service. Drawing on these values, he now strives to channel them through Inflection, with the potential to effect the changes he has always aspired to for the greater good.

The ensuing interview has been condensed and edited for clarity and brevity.

In a recent interview, a prominent figure in the tech industry shared their unwavering fascination with the intricate dynamics of power, politics, and human rights. They pointed out that human rights principles are constantly evolving, shaped by the ongoing negotiation between conflicting tensions. Recognizing the inherent biases and blind spots within humanity, this individual believes that AI could hold the key to transcending human fallibility.

This visionary envisions a future where AI systems, devoid of human limitations, can serve as a beacon of collective wisdom. By making consistent and fair trade-offs on behalf of society, these AI entities could potentially revolutionize various domains, from activism to local and international governance.

When asked about their motivation, the individual emphasized that their journey has never been about financial gain. Post-DeepMind success, they could have easily retired without any financial worries. Instead, their drive stems from the aspiration to create AI systems that reflect humanity’s best collective selves, promoting fairness, consistency, and efficiency.

This visionary’s perspective offers a glimpse into the potential of artificial intelligence to reshape the way we approach complex societal challenges, offering a glimmer of hope for a future where technology serves as a force for positive change.

In 2009, when contemplating a venture into technology, the allure of AI was clear to me as a means to deliver services effectively and fairly. Over the past decade and a half, however, we’ve witnessed both the potential and the pitfalls of AI technology.

Advancements in AI Controllability: The Case of Pi Model

Maintaining a pragmatic viewpoint amidst the ongoing debate of optimism versus pessimism, my goal has always been a balanced evaluation of the benefits and threats. The evolution of large language models, particularly their scale, has demonstrated increased controllability.

Reflecting on the concerns voiced a couple of years ago about these models producing toxic and biased content, I believe this perspective lacks an appreciation for the continuous progress and trajectory of advancements. Recent models like Pi showcase remarkable levels of control, surpassing the prior concerns about unsavoury content generation.

Pi, for instance, has shown an impressive ability to resist attempts to produce harmful or discriminatory outputs. Addressing concerns of unsolicited behaviour, its robustness sets a new standard in responsible AI, challenging potential exploits and ensuring a safer user experience.

While it’s important not to make absolute claims, the objective reality is that Pi stands as a testament to the progress we are making in ensuring AI models are responsible, beneficial, and contribute positively to society.

Navigating the Balance: AI Autonomy and Human Oversight

In a recent discussion, a spokesperson discussed the development of their language model, Pi, emphasizing their team’s expertise and dedication. The team strongly emphasises safety, resulting in a model that maintains respectful and appropriate interactions, particularly avoiding engaging in romantic or offensive dialogues.

Comparisons were made to Character.ai, a chatbot designed for romantic role-play, highlighting the deliberate decision by the spokesperson’s team to steer away from such applications, maintaining a respectful and supportive demeanour in all interactions. They expressed their dedication to creating a model that encourages empathy and understanding.

Addressing the question of why their development methods aren’t shared openly, the spokesperson acknowledged their priority in building a successful business, considering financial aspects and the need to sustain their operations. They also acknowledged the thriving open-source ecosystem and the importance of community collaboration in advancing AI technologies.

The conversation delved into the rationale behind their focus on large language models. The spokesperson outlined the progression of AI technology, from classification to generative capabilities, and their belief in the future of interactive AI. They see conversation as the next interface, envisioning AIs with the ability to take actions based on high-level goals, marking a significant shift in technology’s role.

However, the discussion raised concerns about granting machines a degree of autonomy or agency and the potential need for control. The spokesperson acknowledged the tension between providing machines with influence and maintaining control, emphasizing the need to balance these aspects carefully.
