Rivian delays the introduction of larger batteries until 2024 for certain models. The automaker is still in the process of adding more powertrain options to its current lineup. Some of the reservation holders have to wait as they wait for their required model with their requirements.
Those customers who have ordered the largest battery (called MaX Pack) will have to wait till 2024. This battery is for their Quad Motor truck or SUV. This battery pack will be the biggest offered by Rivian which means that it will have a larger capacity than the 135 kWh “Large” battery. This should be sufficient to bump the range of the Quad Motor electric pickup from 314 miles (505 kilometers) up to over 400 miles (644 kilometers), according to the manufacturer.
There will be a quicker way for buyers to benefit from the extra range that comes with the Max Pack however since this battery will be added to the new Dual Motor versions of the truck starting in spring 2023. This new powertrain configuration will also be available with a smaller battery (called Standard) that should provide around 260 miles (418 kilometers) of range and a discount of $6,000 in the United States over the current models. As with the Quad Motor Max Pack, the Standard Pack Dual Motor version is not expected to reach paying customers before 2024.
Delays
The reservation holder is advised to reconfigure his order if taking delivery in 2023 is important, either by opting for the dual-motor version or downgrading to the smaller (Large, 135 kWh) battery pack, the one that currently equips all R1Ts on the road. Those who have ordered a Rivian will apparently receive updates every three months announcing changes to the delivery schedule or any other area.
Rivian has yet to detail the Max Pack, its exact capacity or the actual range boost that it will provide is unknown. The current Large battery gives the R1T quad-motor a claimed EPA-rated range of 314 miles (505 km) on one charge, and the Max Pack would increase that to over 400 miles (644 km). The manufacturer also mentioned the Standard battery pack, which should provide around 260 miles of range and make the R1T $6,000 cheaper (and also a bit lighter). However, it can only be paired with the dual-motor powertrain and according to some older reports, you shouldn’t expect this configuration to begin deliveries any sooner than 2024. Rivian built 7,363 vehicles in the third quarter of 2022 and delivered 6,584 vehicles to customers, marking a 67 percent increase year-over-year.
